Beyond 20/20 for Beginners

Plan Who needs Beyond 20/20 anyway? Pros and cons of using 20/20 What is Beyond 20/20, and what can we do with it? Pros and cons of using 20/20 How to use Beyond 20/20 How to graph the results so that others can see in 20/20 Other resources for future reference What is Beyond 20/20 Why do we need 20/20 for data?

Who needs Beyond 20/20 anyway? Introduction Who needs Beyond 20/20 anyway?

Choices from Statistics Canada From Basic To Beyond 20/20 Census profiles Health Profiles and Summary tables re: Health Summary tables Summary tables: re: Economic accounts Summary tables re: Agriculture Summary tables re: Justice Topic-based tabulations and related Census tables Health Indicators CANSIM tables on vital statistics, socio-economic, health and business topics Census of Agriculture pre-2006 Criminal Justice tables Choices from Statistics Canada

Why does Statistics Canada use the Beyond 20/20 format for many of their tables? Why does Statistics Canada use Beyond 20/20 for so many of its tables? MANY TOPICS – open data Dig deeper than basic statistics – open data for students, interested public & researchers Fuller portraits of Canadian society, our health and the Canadian economy More advanced still – may want to use Odesi’s table creation via Scholars Portal (bilingual)

20/20 Great for these audiences: Students and researchers to help them to communicate (statistical) information; Anyone who is new to statistics or data; Anyone who needs in-depth geographic and time information and especially anyone who needs to communicate this information visually

WHAT DOES BEYOND 20/20 give the user? Features WHAT DOES BEYOND 20/20 give the user?

Why choose Beyond 20/20? More detail on a given topic; Great tool for capturing and formatting statistical information; Great tool for communicating information,

Get more detail! Multi-dimensional tables From basic tables … … to 2, 3 or more dimensions! For example: Rate of diabetes in Canada Change in unemployment rate from last year in Ottawa-Gatineau Number of fitness and recreational establishments in Ottawa-Gatineau Number of people with postsecondary education in Québec Average income in Québec Rate of violent crime in Ottawa-Gatineau For example: Rate of elderly people with diabetes in Canada in largely rural regions Change in unemployment rate for middle- aged immigrants compared to last year in Ottawa-Gatineau Number of fitness and recreational establishments in Ottawa-Gatineau employing 5 or more people last year Average income of people with OR without postsecondary education in Québec Rate of violent crime for young people in Ottawa-Gatineau Get more detail! Multi-dimensional tables

More detail: Beyond 20/20 can provide: Repeated statistics over a period of time In-depth geographic comparisons New details (like demographic detail on who?) on a topic Up to 10 aspects (i.e., dimensions) on a given topic Very large statistical tables! And then you narrow it down the way you want it!

Get time series data with 20/20 One-time statistical measures Same statistical measures repeated over time Number of smokers in 1996/1997 etc. as a percentage of the total population Number of smokers in 1994/1995 who remained smokers in 1996/1997, etc. Number of smokers in 1994/1995 who became non- smokers in 1996/1997, etc. Number of smokers in 1994/1995 as a percentage of the total population Get time series data with 20/20

The pros versus the cons How does Beyond 20/20 work? The pros versus the cons

The Pros versus the Cons Great data viewer / extractor (many uses) Statistics Canada distributes the viewer free of charge The viewer is installed on all Library pc’s Training material is available Fully bilingual Learning curve (not intuitive) - today is just an introduction It only works with Windows Many labs don’t have it No built-in help features Costly to develop tables – covers only certain subjects * * Odesi goes further !

Many uses including Great tool for communicating information: You can manipulate and customize how your table looks You can download the results in different formats like Excel Then you can pretty-up your table or visualise the information through a graph or map Some technical skills required

Visualise/format your data in Beyond 20/20 the way you want it … Beyond 20/20 table Statistics Canada, (2012) .Changes in smoking between 1994/1995 and 2010/2011, household population aged 12 and over who reported on smoking every 2 years, by age group and sex, Canada and provinces, every 2 years.

Then download to Excel and pretty it up … Download to Excel to make formatting changes

Visualise / communicate the results Source: Statistics Canada. (2012). Table 104-7006 .Changes in smoking between 1994/1995 and 2010/2011, household population aged 12 and over who reported on smoking every 2 years, by age group and sex, Canada and provinces, every 2 years. CANSIM (database). Retrieved from: http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a01?lang=eng

Or communicate downloaded information spatially, using a GIS …

Steps and examples How to use beyond 20/20

Layout basics: Introductory table See pages 5-8 of training guide (IDEA: later on your own, from the pages 9-16 that interest you) Click on: Profile of Census 2006 age and sex table Note : Dimensions on columns and rows rows are easier to read, so switching columns to rows makes sense File options: Save as, summary web page for public Census profile tables

Our example We will do a warm-up example together From the Census 2006 Topic-based tabulations : Topic: Marital Status Click on: Table

Explore 20/20 The example that follows after will be on your own. It will be more advanced in that the results will be downloaded to Excel and then graphed in Excel. We will use Odesi to access the files.

Objective Find the rate of violent crime in Canada over the past 10 years in order to advise the government on the need for more prisons Remember not to close Beyond 20/20 when you’re done, we still want to save to Excel and graph the results

On your own Follow the steps as we did in the example Are you going to focus on prisons in general, or on prisons for men, women or young adult men … ? You will pick: the Violation - Total violent crime violations (including traffic) New: Working with a time series dimension Click on : Odesi access page

Uniform Crime Reporting Survey

graph the results & let others can see in 20/20! Steps for communicating your results graph the results & let others can see in 20/20!
