Recap Through Joseph’s dream interpretations for the chief baker and cup bearer in prison, Joseph is summoned to interpret two dreams that the Pharaoh had. Joseph interprets the dreams as meaning that there would be 7 years of plenty, followed by 7 years of severe famine Joseph makes a recommendation to Pharaoh to appoint wise men to handle the task of preparing for the famine during the years of plenty, so that there would be food during the famine

Recap Pharaoh agrees with Joseph and makes him second in charge over the whole land of Egypt. He’s given tremendous power. Joseph was 30 years old at this time. 13 years have passed since his brothers plotted against him.

The famine begins A severe famine strikes the whole earth (Gen 41:56) and people from far away were coming to Egypt to buy food from Joseph Jacob sends his sons to Egypt to buy food

Jacob commissions his sons Gen 42:1-5 – Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?” He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die.”

Jacob commissions his sons Gen 42:3-5 – Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt. But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “I am afraid that harm may befall him.” So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

He begins to test them in various ways, accusing them of being spies, putting them in jail for three days, holding Simeon hostage until they return with Benjamin, putting their money for the food back into their sacks, etc. The sons return and tell Jacob what all took place, and how they were treated

Joseph and his brothers Genesis 43 Simeon is left in Egypt for an unknown amount of time. 43:2 says that Jacob sent them back when they had eaten all of the grain they purchased! Jacob sends them for more food Judah refuses to go without Benjamin as he’s afraid of what “the man” (Joseph) will do

Joseph and his brothers Genesis 43 Jacob finally relents, agrees to send Benjamin alone, pretty much resigning himself to losing another child (vs. 14) The sons return to Egypt with Benjamin, and Joseph treats them kindly. He treats Benjamin especially kind, as he is his full brother and Benjamin did not appear to have any part in plotting against Joseph (he was probably tool young to do so anyway)

Joseph reveals himself Joseph contends with his brothers more, and attempts to keep Benjamin while sending his brothers back home again Judah contends with Joseph that he cannot possibly go back to Jacob without Benjamin At this, Joseph can take no more and reveals himself to his brothers

Joseph’s trust in God Genesis 45:5-8 – Now do not be grieved or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. Now, therefore, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

Joseph’s trust in God Genesis 50:19-21 – But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

Jacob and family move to Egypt Pharaoh offers for Joseph’s family to move to Egypt and offers the best of the land Wagons and wagons of food, silver, and clothing are sent to Jacob Jacob at first does not believe that Joseph is alive, but is then convinced of it all, and his “spirit was revived” (Gen 45:27) 46:27 – All of the direct descendants (i.e. all blood relatives) of Jacob that moved to Egypt were 70 people

Death of Jacob Jacob’s (Israel) family grew very large in Egypt, they acquired property and became very fruitful Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years, and died at the age of 147 Jacobs health began to fade, he made Joseph promise to bury him in Canaan with Abraham and Isaac

Death of Jacob Genesis 48 – 49, Jacob prophesies to his sons what would befall each one of them, mostly due to how they lead their lives He also blessed each one of them He named Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim as his own (48:5). Therefore, Joseph’s sons also became two of the twelve tribes of Egypt. Joseph, his brothers, and a large company of people traveled to bury Joseph in Abraham’s tomb in the field of Machpelah. Also where Sarah, Isaac & Rebekah, and Leah were buried.

Death of Joseph Lived 110 years. Saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons He made his family swear to take his bones with them when God carried them out of Egypt Exodus 13:19 – Moses takes Joseph’s bones with him out of Egypt Joshua 24:32 – Joseph is buried in Canaan on land which Jacob had purchased Hebrews 11:22 – By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave orders concerning his bones.
