INTRUSIVE COUNSELING MODELS Concept of Intrusive Counseling dates back as early as 1972 May also be referred to: Intrusive Advising Proactive Advising Developmental Academic Advising

INTRUSIVE COUNSELING MODELS Intrusive Advising is about getting to the heart of what is causing difficulty for a student and recommending the appropriate intervention (Earl 1988). Earl (1988) describes the intrusive model of advising as an action-oriented approach involving and motivating students to seek help when needed. Earl, W.R. (1988). Intrusive advising of freshmen in academic difficulty. NACADA Journal, 8, 27-33.

IMMEDIATE RESULTS OF INTRUSIVE COUNSELING 2015-16 - Increased completion of Student Education Plan by 88% - Increased completion of AA/S Degrees by 25% 2016-17 - Increased completion of Student Education Plan by 45% - Increased completion of AA/S Degrees by 61%

College Services @ JFK: Before FALL 2015 Minimal-to-No college services present at JFKMCHS Students had to go to Norco College’s counseling department for counseling/advising services relating to their college coursework No on-site college counseling at JFK

College Services @ JFK: Before FALL 2015 Low amount of SEPs created for JFK population Low utilization of services at Norco College Low number of students completing certificates and degrees (6 graduates being the most from this group) Students completing a high number of units, without completing requirements for: IGETC CSU GE Certificates & degrees Major preparation

College Services @ JFK: FALL 2015 The JFKMCHS / Norco College partnership enters a new phase Fund for Student Success Grant (CCCCO) Norco College hires a counselor (part-time) and educational advisor (part-time) to serve the college needs of JFKMCHS students They are brought on board in late September ’15 The first counseling/advising project is piloted onsite at JFK late October ’15. College Services @ JFK: FALL 2015 …College Knowledge Hour Piloted to create a Norco College presence at JFK Established a place where students can: meet with the college counselor and/or an educational advisor without an appointment; pick up information on degrees, transfer requirements, etc.; address college issues Takes place at least three times a week during Excel period and Lunch (typical free time for JFK students)

Beyond FALL 2015: Changing the Culture @ JFK Creating a more informed and college ready student body Norco College 101 night Application Workshops/ Registration Lab New campaign to have every JFK student on an Ed.
