The Evolution of the Status of Women in India By: Anecia Jordon The Evolution of the Status of Women in India

Background The process of the status of women have gone through many ups and downs throughout history. In 1857, Britain began to colonize in the Indian territory. Women in India are underrepresented in the Indian government. Between 1950 and 1974, there was a major increase of girls and women enrolling into school.

The Faces of women in India

Research Question In what ways has the status of women in India evolved from the early 1900s to the present?

Thesis Statement The status of women in India has had little improvement since the early 1900s.

Reason for topic I choose this topic because people do not pay attention to the issues that go on with other countries besides our own. The topic deals with women’s rights and I believe it’s important to know how women struggle to be viewed as equal as their male counterparts.

Support & Evidence “It is important to recognise that for a country of India's magnitude, change in male-female relations and the kinds of issues the women's movement is focusing on, will not come easy. For every step the movement takes forward, there will be a possible backlash, a possible regression” (Butalia). “To advocate women’s equality and their right to participate in nationalist politics, the All India Women’s Conference (AIWC) was formed in 1927” (Karki). “As a result of their newly gained freedom Indian woman have distinguished themselves in various spheres of life as politicians, orators, lawyers, doctors, administrators and diplomats” (Singh).

Learning Outcome Women in other countries are still fighting to get their rights. Women in India had to bow down to show honor and respect for the male figures in their lives. American women are not the only one who had to fight to be equal as men.

Significance to History The evolution of women’s status in India has changed but not by a great deal. It makes you realize that other countries and nations have it worse than we do. Even though our government makes mistakes, other countries‘ governments do not attempt to give equal rights.
