Goal Setting “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” ~ Yogi Berra

Direct attention to what needs to happen now Goal Setting: Is an organized way to identify what needs to be done and a way to measure whether or not it is getting done. Direct attention to what needs to happen now Forces us to think about where we are now and develop strategies to get where we want to be. Motivation: when we accomplish small goals, it encourages us to keep going

II. Basically two types of goals: A II. Basically two types of goals: A. Outcome Goals: Long term goals, represent a standard of performance that focuses on the result of a contest, endeavor, or person. B. Performance Goals: short term, improvements related to ones past performance a) Example: watch film of yourself playing football, basketball, etc. see a weakness and attempt to fix it OR see a weakness in school and make a plan to get stronger. b) Performance goals allow us to see immediate improvement c) Performance goals are linked to levels of anxiety, motivation, and confidence

III. Goals need to be written down A. Must be specific and measurable B. State goals positively: Get a 3.0 or higher this semester vs. Quit failing every class C. When possible set a date or deadline for when your goal should be accomplished. D. Identify ways of achieving the goal: “I will lose 10 lbs but cutting out soda and running two miles every day.”

IV. Feedback/Accountability A. You need people in your life who can keep you accountable and give you feedback and encouragement for your goals. B. Share your goals with someone who will check in with you now and then to make sure you are staying on track. C. A tool to record and evaluate goals: a log, journal, goal setting sheet, etc.

Setting too many goals too soon V. Problems to Avoid: Setting too many goals too soon Setting goals you are unable or UNWILLING to achieve. Setting unrealistic goals, if you start small and raise them as you go its better than setting them too high and lowering them—give yourself the best chance at succeeding. Surrounding yourself with people who will discourage you from your goals rather than push you toward them.

Why is GPA so important? Most colleges require a 3.0 GPA (B average) minimum to be admitted (unless you have exceptionally high ACT or SAT scores). If you can’t handle the work load of high school how can you handle the load of college?
