Problem-solution essay

Everything is an argument Seriously. This means everything. Problem-Solution is also an argument. You are ARGUING that the solutions you present are realistic and will help solve the problem. This is NOT an essay about the Problem; your essay must focus on the SOLUTIONS. Expository essays get a ZERO

For whom are you writing? Audience and purpose For whom are you writing? Legislators? Parents? Educators? This is your audience! Must keep audience in mind the whole time you’re writing. What is your purpose? Persuade. Prove that your solutions are going to make a difference.

Old-school thesis (aka the three-part thesis) Solutions to Opioid Crisis A 3-part thesis can’t accommodate all these reasons! Build more treatment facilities to meet the demand Increase awareness in community and at schools Increase border security checks for drugs Create a more effective computer system to keep track of who is prescribed which drugs Increase regulations of amounts of prescription drugs You can’t write a 5-page essay by using a 3-part thesis!

Sample thesis OLD NEW The opioid crisis can be mitigated by increasing border checks, regulations on prescriptions, and community awareness. The opioid crisis is destroying America from the inside out and fixing this issue will require everyone from community members to legislators to act immediately before more precious lives are lost. This thesis is OPEN so you can write about it in lots and lots of paragraphs!

The opioid crisis is destroying America from the inside out, and fixing this issue will require make it dramatic! everyone from community members to legislators to act immediately before more precious lives name your audience! make it urgent!! are lost. What happens if it’s not fixed?

Thesis rules You only get one sentence Must make your issue sound like the situation is pretty desperate! What will happen if you don’t fix it? Always write your thesis statement FIRST!! (even though it is NOT the first sentence of your essay)

TO do today: Write one thesis statement for each of the three other thesis statements on the back of your Problem-Solution paper… If you’re using one of these as YOUR essay topic, please take a pic of the thesis since you’ll be turning this paper in. Due at end of class. Buddy System FOR TOMORROW: You need your topic picked out!! We will be outlining/ writing thesis statement in class

Help finding your THREE sources Each paragraph will be about a different solution. Find sources based on your SOLUTION, NOT THE PROBLEM! Example: Problem—opioid crisis. Solution—more facilities. Source—find an article about how there are not enough facilities to help people who want help with their drug addiction. You are not SUMMARIZING your sources. You are using them to PROVE YOUR POINT.

Intro Paragraph Fully explain the problem! Make people CARE about the problem Causes and effects of the problem Use strong words that carry weight! Use transition words and phrases Strong thesis

Body Paragraph Topic Sentence, which presents the solution. Explain the solution; describe details about how it would work to solve the problem. Cite from source to support your solution. Use transition word or phrase to discuss OPPOSITION to your solution (why your solution will not work) **COUNTER- ARGUMENT** Must REFUTE the opposition (why it WILL work) **REBUTTAL** Tie everything back to your thesis—how does everything you wrote in this paragraph PROVE what you stated in your thesis?

Conclusion Paragraph Do NOT summarize everything you already said in your essay!! Focus on outcomes—what happens if the problem is solved?? How do your solutions eliminate the problem? How will the world/school/families/whoever experience change due to implementation of your solutions?
