TRANSITION TO 3x5

Poway High School Circa 1960 TODAY Officially dedicated on Nov. 4, 1961 TODAY

Educational institutions should be fluid entities that don’t simply change, for change sake, rather they adapt to the needs and aspirations of their current student body. Our transition over the past 2 years has been deliberate, thought out, and has involved discussions and input from students, staff, community members and district office personnel.

Tonight’s Goals Understand why this transition is being made Understand how it’s going to impact you and your student. Know the resources that are available to you and your student to register for classes next year.

Introductions and Thank you Your administrative team: Principal Ron Garrett Assistant Principals Mr. Peter McKee (A – GIK) Ms. Catherine Burling (GIL – NEL) Mr. Aaron Little (NEM-Z)

Your Counseling Team: Ms. Christy Brown (A – Er) Ms Your Counseling Team: Ms. Christy Brown (A – Er) Ms. Jerrah McGeorge (Es – La) Ms. Blanca Arreguin (Le – Ra) Ms. Jerilyn Padua Reyes (Re – Z) Special Thank Yous: Rachel Allums (PTSA President) Lisa Stuber (Administrative Assistant)

When you have questions… Write them on the notecard you were provided and hand them in as you leave. This Powerpoint will be on our website, under the counseling tab. An FAQ sheet is posted on our website, under the counseling tab. More informational meetings to come

What was the rationale? Credit recovery & remediation Opportunities to accelerate Flexibility in a student’s learning schedule

What was the rationale? Allow for more support classes (AVID, L/Strats, Academic Success) More opportunities to meet and exceed UC/CSU A-G requirements Allows for students to focus on fewer courses

Opportunities and Options Students Can: Have an off-roll to lighten their loads, play sports, work, intern, etc. Balance 4 or 5 classes compared to 6 Graduate Early

Opportunities and Options Students Can: Retake classes they get a D or F in Make up credits without going to summer school or paying for classes Have room for support courses

A Few Differences… This Year Next Year Students can earn a maximum of 60 credits Students can earn a maximum of 75 credits Students who want to move faster through a course sequence are stuck. Students can take more of the courses they wish. Students can strategically take off roll during their season or during a time of the year that works for them. Athletes now “hope” they don’t have an academic course 6th period Class time is on average 50 minutes Class time will be about 65-70 minutes Students have 180 days of instruction per class Students have about 120 days of instruction per class

Bell Schedule Currently being finalized. A few things we know… All classes will meet every day No lab days The addition of homeroom 2 days/week Early release will remain the same Monday dismissal around 1:40 pm
