Location

Location Situated in northeast Africa. Its origins begin in upper Egypt at Abydos & Hierakonpolis. Spreads towards Memphis & the Mediterranean. By 3000 b.C. occupied the entire Nile Valley.

Government

Government Produced the first government to rule an entire nation. Pharaoh was the ruler of politics & religion. Pharaohs were called: -Lord of the two lands -High Priest of every temple Temples were used as places of worship & also as granaries & treasuries where grains were stored.

Army

Army Soldiers were armed with arrows & bows, spears & round topped shields (made from stretched animal skin). Weapons & armours improved after the adoption of bronze. In the new kingdom, chariots became a standard part of the army.

Religion

Religion Ra: Sun God Isis: Goddess of Nature & Magic Horus: God of War Osiris: God of Dead Small domestic statues were used by normal Egyptians. Charms & amulets were worn for protection against evil.

Writing & Literature

Writing & Literature Hieroglyphics a word, sound or silence determinative. Egyptian hieroglyphics can be read in rows or columns in either direction. Hieratic: used in their daily work. Hieratic were easier to use.

Architecture Built some of the most inspiring structures the world has ever seen: Pyramid of Giza. The average Egyptian lived in a simple mud, wood or brick abode.

Art

Art Emphasises on a rigid style which unhanged over the millennia. Its art became more conservative and rigid. The iconic Egyptian two dimensional style is found on tombs, temples and statues .

Technology

Technology Mathematics: Developed higher level of mathematical skills to enable them to build pyramids & temples. Medicine: -Funerary practices which involved embalming the dead didn’t lead to detailed knowledge of human anatomy. -Their medicine acquired an excellent reputation in the ancient world. -Opium was used as a pain killer. Ship builders: -In early 3000 b.C. an Egyptian ship was built (95 ft). -Despite having ships on which to sail, they weren’t renowned as great sailors.
