Changes of State Page 23 Learning Target: I can explain how matter changes states when thermal energy is added or removed. Respond to LT: (Leave Space to Answer)

Changes between Solid and Liquid Page 23 Solid Liquid, the solid is melting. Solid ice melts in warm temperatures and forms liquid water. Liquid Solid, the liquid is freezing. Liquid water freezes in very cold temperatures and forms ice.

Changes between liquid and gas Page 23 Liquid Gas, is called vaporization. At high temperatures, water changes to water vapor. Gas Liquid, is called condensation. When water vapor cools, it becomes liquid water.

Changes between Solid and Gas Page 23 Direct change from solid gas is called sublimation. When snow seems to disappear without melting, sublimation has taken place. Direct change from a gas solid is called deposition. When water vapor on plants changes to frost without turning to a liquid first, deposition has occurred.

Changes between Gas and Plasma Gas Plasma is called ionization. When a lot of energy(radiation, heat, electricity) is pushed into a gas, electrons break away from their atoms causing the gas to become charged with positive and negatively charged particles, known as ions.

Changes between gas and plasma continued… Plasma Gas is called deionization. When energy is removed from the plasma, the electrons recombine with their atoms and the plasma returns to a gas.

This diagram shows the effect thermal energy has on the states of matter. Using your notes, label this diagam using the following terms: -Vaporization -Melting -Ionization -Condensation -Sublimation -Freezing -Deionization -Deposition a. e. b. f. c. g. d. h.

The Effect of Thermal Energy Page The Effect of Thermal Energy Melting When a solid GAINS thermal energy, the particles of the solid move in place FASTER. Freezing When a liquid LOSES thermal energy, the particles of the liquid SLOW down. Over time, the particles move into fixed places.

Vaporization When a liquid GAINS thermal energy, the particles of the liquid move FASTER. Condensation When gas particles LOSE thermal energy, they SLOW down. As the particles slow down, the particles move closer together and form liquid.

Sublimation Sublimation takes place when particles on the surface of a solid GAIN enough thermal energy to spread far apart and form a gas. Deposition Deposition takes place in subfreezing temperatures. Particles lose thermal energy and quickly become solid before passing through the liquid phase.

Ionization Ionization takes place when gas GAINS thermal energy causing electrons to break away from their atoms which results in a plasma. Deionization Deionization takes place when plasma LOSES thermal energy and free electrons bond with their respective atoms, returning the plasma back to gas.
