Sackville Rivers Association River Rangers 2016 Protect and restore the Sackville River watershed Raise awareness about the the Sackville River watershed Develop a watershed management plan Educate the public about the importance of environmental preservation & stewardship

A watershed is an area of land that catches rain and snow. All the water falling on a watershed drains or seeps into a body of water (marsh, stream, river or lake) or sinks into the ground forming groundwater. Watersheds can include the natural environment (forests, fields) and areas occupied by humans (farms, towns, cities). Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes.

Are watersheds important? Is the human circulatory system important? Are watersheds important? Watershed – does it remind you of anything? Watersheds are like a circulatory system Both carry nutrients Watersheds remove sediments Circulatory system removes waste Keep bodies clean Keep rivers clean

Let’s compare! Carry water and nutrients Transport wastes Essential to the body Affected by human decisions Sackville river watershed – does it remind you of anything? Compare circulatory system to river system Both carry nutrients Watersheds remove sediments Circulatory system removes waste Keep bodies clean Keep rivers clean Carry water and nutrients Transport wastes Essential to the environment Affected by human decisions

What watershed do you live in? The Sackville River Watershed!

Watersheds and Living Things In the Sackville River watershed there are THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT KINDS of living things. Can you name?: Plants Fish Reptiles and amphibians Birds Mammals Insects

Watersheds and Living Things Plants The Sackville River watershed provides a suitable environment or HABITAT for all of them

Watersheds and Living Things Fish The Sackville River watershed provides a suitable environment or HABITAT for all of them

Watersheds and Living Things Reptiles and amphibians The Sackville River watershed provides a suitable environment or HABITAT for all of them

Watersheds and Living Things Birds The Sackville River watershed provides a suitable environment or HABITAT for all of them

Watersheds and Living Things Mammals The Sackville River watershed provides a suitable environment or HABITAT for all of them

Watersheds and Living Things Insects The Sackville River watershed provides a suitable environment or HABITAT for all of them

What is a habitat? Habitat: The environment or place where a type of living thing can survive For an animal, a suitable habitat is where it can find: Food Water Shelter And anything else that it needs to live! Who can name the habitat of a toucan? Or a wolf? Or a fish?

What is a habitat? habitat community population organism The gigantic rainforest, the ocean. Or a dead log, garden or even a single plant

What is an organism? An organism is one single living thing This organism is an Atlantic Salmon

What is a population? A population is the number of individuals of a particular species living in a habitat.

What are biological communities? A biological community is all the species that live in a specific habitat.

Let’s Make Our School Habitat!

The River Rangers Program A Field Study of the Habitats of the Sackville River Watershed

Our Habitat Field Study: The Sackville River Watershed We will examine three of the different habitats found within the Sackville River watershed Forest Wetland River We will visit the watershed and make habitat observations

Our Habitat Field Study: The Sackville River Watershed We need to learn everything we can about the different habitats. The difference between herbaceous plants, bushes and trees. The kinds of insects and other invertebrates that live in the Sackville River The different water habitats that fish like

Our Habitat Field Study: Environment Affects the Watershed We will consider how changes in the environment affect the Sackville River watershed For example: Rain/snow fall Wind Human-made changes to the environment

Our Habitat Field Study: Adaptations We will identify plant and animal adaptations that allow species to live in their particular habitat For example: How are plants and animals adapted to live in the water? Observe the animals in tank and refer to your field notes

Our Habitat Study: The Sackville River Back in the classroom we will classify plants and animals according to their roles in a food chain and food web Observe the animals in your tank. Do you observe any feeding? Who are the producers, consumers, and decomposers? Herbivore Carnivore 1e Plant Carnivore 2

Our Habitat Study: The Sackville River We will make detailed observations of the behaviour and adaptations of some Sackville River organisms in our aquarium Observe our classroom tank Monitor water quality Record our findings in our Scientific Journal

Our Habitat Study: The Sackville River Identify positive and negative impacts by humans on habitat Test water quality Observe signs of pollution, littering and physical destruction of the river

Taking Care of Our River and its Watershed Encourage stewardship and Promote Conservation
