Homework – Due Tuesday 16th September Depending on lesson... Either Research and write down 5 key facts about Dr Livingstone and how he affected the colonisation of Africa Or .... Read the economic factors notes and write two opinions on the causes for the colonisation of Africa. One should be that economic factors caused the colonisation of Africa. The other is that economic factors did not cause the colonisation of Africa.

Who was Dr Livingstone and how did he contribute to the colonisation of Africa?

How did Dr Livingstone affect the colonisation of Africa?

How did Dr Livingstone affect the colonisation of Africa? Case Study 1. In 1876 Stanley had a letter published in the Daily Telegraph in London in which he made a plea for missionaries to come to Buganda (modern day Uganda) saying that the King was interested in Christianity but the kingdom was currently Muslim. Funding poured in. In 1877 the first missionaries arrived, including the protestant Scotsman Mackay. Civil War erupted in the kingdom over what religion and outsiders to support, and eventually a British protestant bishop was murdered in 1885 who went to try and enforce Protestant conversion. The British were lobbied even more as the Civil War continued. In 1888 a semi-official presence was established with the presence of the Imperial British East Africa Company, they were particularly interested in trade and keeping order. By the early 1890s the IBEAC were in serious financial trouble, and in 1894 the British government reluctantly declared a protectorate over Uganda.

How did Dr Livingstone affect the colonisation of Africa? Case Study 2. The area around Lake Nyasa, present-day Malawi, had powerful slave-traders. As a result of Livingstone’s Legacy (3 Cs) people argued for intervention to crush the slave-traders. When the British government finally declared a protectorate in 1889, it was mainly to try to stop the Portuguese encroaching from the East, although the missionaries provided them with a conveniant humanitarian argument.
