Particulate (Fly Ash) Removal All coals contain some ash, which remains as a residue after combustion. The majority, about 85%, of the ash is carried over with the flue gas in a pulverised coal fired boiler and is known as fly ash. The ash loading in the flue gas can be very large for a high ash content coal and, if not collected, would be a major source of air pollution.
