What is ecotourism? Sustainable Tourism – tourism which meets the needs of the present tourists & host communities while protecting & enhancing the needs of future generations. Ecotourism – responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment & improves the well-being of local people.

The principles of ecotourism Contribute to conservation efforts Minimise the negative impacts of tourism Employ local people & contribute financially to the local community The principles of ecotourism Educate visitors about local environment & culture Cooperate with local people to manage natural areas Provide positive experience for both visitor and host

Enable profits from tourism to benefit the local people. Employ local people. Benefit large tour companies. Bring crime to the area. Be a community-led programme. Be intrusive to the local people and environment. Involve tourists in large numbers. Involve small numbers of tourists. Disturb the wildlife of the rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. Endanger the survival of the rainforest plant and animal species. Involve wild late night parties. Be educational to tourists. Provide all the services and facilities that tourists might want.
