What do you think is happening here?

Genius or Fool? ‘On the Mexican and U.S. border a Mexican was discovered in a vehicle, disguised as a car seat. He was caught by immigration officials who spotted his head sticking out from the leather head rest.’’

International Migration The movement of people away from their homeland to a foreign country.

175 million Interesting Fact!!! In the year 2000, it was estimated that only 3% of the worlds population lived outside the country of their birth. 175 million

International Migration Flows

Examples of International Migration From the Caribbean to the USA Caribbean countries have a culture of emigration. Cuba is the main exporter: 10% of people born in Cuba now live in the United States. The other main sources are the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Haiti. People go first to the Bahamas, and later try to enter the US by sea. From Mexico to the USA One of the largest cross-border flows in the world is from Mexico to the USA. Of the 108 million people alive today who were born in Mexico more than 8 million live in the USA.

Examples of International Migration Other Europeans to the UK Around half the immigrants in the UK come from the EU, though the most significant sending country is still Ireland, whose citizens have unrestricted rights of entry From South Asia to the UK The Indian subcontinent has been an important source of immigrants to the UK. In the 1960s the British government started to close the doors so most new arrivals nowadays are joining other family members.

Examples of International Migration Australia diversifies Asian migration to Australia, from China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia is making Australia ethnically more diverse. Many Asians and others have also been arriving by boat as refugees To Australia from the UK Australia has large British contingent. Of the 3.9 million foreign-born, according to the 1996 census, 27% came from the United Kingdom.

Types of International Migrants Settlers These are people who intend to live permanently in their new country. Most head for the main countries of settlement, notably the United States, Canada and Australia. Around one million travel a year, the majority of whom are joining close family member.

Types of International Migrants Contract workers They are admitted to other countries on the understanding that they will stay only for a specific period: the length of their contract. Some are seasonal workers. Others will be on longer-term contracts, of a year or more.

Types of International Migrants Professionals These include employees of transnational corporations who are moved around from one country to another.

Types of International Migrants Unauthorised workers Sometimes called undocumented or illegal immigrants. There are significant numbers in most immigration countries. Some have been smuggled in, others are overstaying their visas, or are working on tourist visas.

Types of International Migrants Asylum seekers and refugees Asylum seekers have left their homes to escape danger; if their claims for asylum have been accepted they are then classified as 'refugees'.
