Background Software, hardware not optimal for facebook, other social applications Not every component used to optimize efficiency facebook decided to make their own software, servers, and data centers Stripped down components, nothing cosmetic

Goal: to build one of the most efficient computing infrastructures at the lowest possible cost Based on the idea of open source software, why not open hardware facebook published all of the designs, specifications, and other intellectual property in order to promote innovation

Energy Efficiency/Cost Efficiency 38% more efficient (no air conditioning) 22% fewer materials Saved 24% in costs
