How to Write a Thesis

What it is: Answers the essay prompt Tells the reader what your essay is going to be about Contains a subject and an opinion Limited to one main idea

What it looks like: Exactly one sentence No matter how long the essay is Last sentence of the first paragraph A declarative statement with no qualifiers Might, maybe, perhaps, etc. Don’t be wishy-washy!

Include: What the essay is about Your claim (e.g. what is your opinion on the topic) Two (or more) reasons that make your claim valid

Let’s practice! Prompt: Theme Analysis The central idea or main message in a narrative is referred to as the theme. Paying close attention to the characters, setting, symbols, and conflict helps to reveal the themes in a novel. Write an essay in which you explain one theme in the novel, analyzing at least two techniques the author uses to reveal this teme. Use textual evidence to support your assertions.
