ITALY Italy is a peninsula located in the European Continent. The capital city is Rome There are almost 60 million people. It has the typical shape of a boot.
SICILY Is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea There are almost 5 million people. Sicily is known for its triangular shape.
PALERMO Palermo is the capital of Sicily. Palermo is rich in monuments. The population is around 1.2 million people.
Teatro Massimo It was opened in 1897 , it’s the largest theatre in Italy and the third in Europe .
THE CATHEDRAL This is the city's cathedral and main church. It is characterized by the presence of different styles: Arab, Norman, Gothic
Martorana Martorana, also known as Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (Saint Mary of the Admiral). It is a fampous church in Palermo. The name Ammiraglio (admiral) derives from the founder of the church George of Antioch, the Greek admiral and principle minister of Ruggero II (a Norman king).
GREEK CROSS PLAN The original church was built in the form of a Greek cross plan, a common south Italian and Sicilian variation on the standard middle Byzantine church type.
CHRIST PANTOKRATOR The nave dome is occupied by the traditional Greek image of Christ Pantokrator (same as in Monreale cathedral and Hagia Sophia basilica in Istanbul)
Palazzo dei Normanni Probably one of the most beautiful Italian palaces and a notable example of Norman Architecture probably built over an Arab fortress. It houses the famous Cappella Palatina.
Zisa A magnificent Arab castle which was subsequently used by the kings of Palermo for hunting. (unfortunately it is closed to visitors)
Abatellis Palace It was built at the end of the 15th century for the prefect of the city, Francesco Abatellis. It is a massive though elegant construction, in typical Catalan Gothic style
PIAZZA PRETORIA Also known as Piazza della vergogna, it is situated in an area named Kalsa (it derives its name from the Arabic word Kasbah) .
QUATTRO CANTI Quattro Canti, is a Baroque square in Palermo This square is octagonal and is divided into four sides forming a crossroad between the two main streets of Palermo: via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. In these four corners there are Baroque buildings ornated with fountains and statues.
SiCILIAN FESTIVALS San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph) is celebrated on 19th March; people burn old stuff. Santa Rosalia, on14th-15th July people celebrate the saint with a parade. On 4 September people go on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Rosalia. Remembrance Day, we celebrate our dead on 2 November. We bring flowers to their graves.
