Purpose and Audience

Purpose: Why has the writer written this article? What do we mean by this? Why has the writer written this article?

What reasons do writers have for writing? To inform To entertain To persuade

What is the purpose of these? A news article about Syria? To inform. An advert for Audi? To persuade. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief? To entertain. A YES campaign leaflet?

A manual for a washing machine? To inform. An email form Game? To persuade. An article about Jennifer Lawrence in a magazine? To entertain. An article about child soldiers?

So any article you read for RUAE will have one of these three purposes: To inform To persuade To entertain.(not only fictional)

To inform: Formal language Detailed information Statistics Facts If an article’s purpose is to inform then it will contain : Formal language Detailed information Statistics Facts

To Persuade Direct address (you) power of three rhetorical questions If an article’s purpose is to persuade then it will contain : Direct address (you) power of three rhetorical questions exaggeration emotive language repetition…

anecdotes humour figures of speech imaginary story To entertain If an article’s purpose is to entertain then it will contain : anecdotes humour figures of speech imaginary story You will get marks identifying and for giving evidence for your choice. (Identify and explain.)

Audience This type of question is asking you to identify who you think the article was written for originally. You will get 1 mark for correctly identifying this. You will get a second mark for giving evidence to support your answer. (Identify and explain.)

First of all look to see if it gives you the details of where it was published. Think about the subject matter. Who is most likely to read this? Don’t just focus on age but think about any special interests it involves such as film making, sci-fi, fishermen…

Now find the evidence to support your choice and quote it. Now explain why this helps you.
