How can you support your child with their attendance? To request an absence during term time – please follow instructions on our website. Please let your child’s tutor know if your child is going to be absent from school for any significant period of time for medical reasons. Please provide medical documents. We can then co-ordinate support. Complete the absence slip in the back of the Learning Handbooks. The tutor will then feed this back to the Year Leader/Attached House Leader. Avoid absence from school wherever possible – try to make doctors and dental appointments out of school hours.

How we work to support you with your child’s attendance Weekly review, which will lead to talking to parents. We work with parents to create action plans in order to improve attendance We are duty bound to follow the Hampshire County Council Code of Conduct for legal intervention relating to term time absence. Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me via email – J.Sambrook@westgate.hants.sch.uk

Reporting in Year 7 One ‘settling in’ report (October) One Parents’ Evening (February) One short report – including effort and achievement grade (March) One full report, which will be a written report from each teacher, including effort and achievement (June)

Westgate Achievement Grades At Key Stage 3 we use the following achievement descriptors: Skilful & accomplished (S) Confident (C) Meeting (M) Developing (D) Below (B) …in relation to the demands of the year 7 curriculum, given what has been taught so far.

Term to describe ACHIEVEMENT to date in KS3 What this means for this stage in Key Stage 3 At the current rate of progress, the possible outcome in Year 11 could be: Skilful and accomplished Mastery of the skills that have been taught so far. Grade 8-9 Confidently and securely meeting the challenges of the curriculum Able to meet the challenges with a measure of confidence and independence that leads to consistently secure achievement in the subject for what has been taught so far. Grade 6-9 Meeting the expectations of the curriculum Is able, with a measure of support, to meet most of the challenges of the curriculum overall (minimum national standards) that have been taught so far. Grade 5-8 Developing or emerging skills in relation to the expectations of the curriculum In some aspects of the subject may be secure, given additional support Some areas of the subject may be more challenging Grade 4-7   Below expected national curriculum standards Not yet securely demonstrating skills against all aspects of the curriculum that have been taught so far

Assessing Pupil Progress – a Holistic Approach Formal assessments and tests Exercise books show a learning journey Verbal contributions Response to targets

Effort grades Exceptional effort Good effort Below expected effort Disappointing or unacceptable level of effort

Growth mindset

Success depends on…. Success is not due to… Time to learn and master the concepts Perseverance Beckham trained every day at the basics for many years – he was not born a genius footballer Success is not due to… Innate skills

It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.

So what do we say? You played well in that match, it is good to see all that training paying off You got a good grade in the homework – I know you put a lot of time and effort into it You haven’t got it quite right yet – but speak with the teacher and they will help you get there

Grouping – ability and flexibility KS2 scaled score in reading Baseline tests – reading and spelling Initial grouping in English and then maths, and referrals to the Learning Support department monitoring the progress made in class with supporting information from CATs working towards KS3 targets is the most important thing

CATs Cognitive Assessment Tests Verbal reasoning Non-verbal reasoning Spatial quantitative
