Running Information and digital literacy projects for libraries and archives

Objectives Facilitate the knowledge to carry out an ILP in libraries and archives. Participants draft a formal ILP plan suited to their organizational needs.

What is the course? Online course, 4 hours sessions during a full week, assignments between sessions Various perspectives on guidelines, theories, methods, and best practices related to information and digital literacy. Formal criteria on structuring, plan, and run the ILP. A solution to the somewhat lack of knowledge professionals have regarding theoretical grounding, structure for LIS initiatives, and learning theories

Contents Provide learning objectives, theoretical presentations, examples, activities, and complementary reading materials, that are guided by a modular structure: a) Conceptual Frameworks, b) Justification and Documentation, c) Managing ILPs, d) Learning Theories, Methods, and Evaluation; e) Information Literacy Initiatives.

Methodology The course is based on a critical pedagogy, which is also constructivist and guided by a Participatory Action Research method. Each 4-hour session includes 2 hours theoretical presentation and 2 hours for the participants to develop activities and ask questions. By the end of the course, the facilitator reviews and provides feedback on their ILP projects. Use of learning resources: Moodle, presentations, multimedia, and complimentary reading materials.

Who has taken the course? (data from questionnaires) Librarians with bachelor and some with masters degree, middle level management They have some notions on the concepts but the course guides them and enhances their understanding in order to move from theory to practice. Some experiences or formal training on the topic, but they are not enough or innovative: techniques are more of the same and they are not given the tools to present a project with possibilities of organizational success. They take this course after peer recommendation and the lack, low frequency, or inexistence of formal/university training offerings; as well as the easiness and convenience of online training

Brief Course Achievements (data from questionnaires) Expectations successfully fulfilled. Learned about: Practical and formal planning for developing projects, The structure of an ILP, Exhaustive analysis of their context (i.e. SWOT), Novel concepts and models
