How to make a speech in English —June

How to make a speech Why be a good speaker? What are speaking skills? How to organize the speech?

Why be a good speaker? Not just “presentation”, but also “persuasion” Get people’s “mindshare” Tell people what you think and why “The man who can think and does not know how to express what he thinks is at the level of him who cannot think.” Pericles

What are speaking skills? Verbal: words spoken 7% Vocal: tone, range, appeal, credibility of voice 38% Visual: physical appearance, gestures, eye contact 55%

Verbal skills Be simple and clear. Don’t ramble. Use simple words Stop to think if you need to. Use simple words Speaking is not like writing. Don’t use complex sentences.

Can you understand this? The development of this frightful means of destruction was ardently demanded by the perils of the time and situation. Simultaneously, however, a new paradoxical situation has been…. is upon us continually. One cannot defend oneself effectively any more. -- Albert Einstein

Vocal skills Play your voice but don’t overdo it. Project and resonate your voice No “UM”s and “ER”s (pause instead) Tools: silence, loudness, intonation, speed)

Have a try! 1. So I expect all of you to get serious this year. I expect you to put your best effort in to everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don’t let us down. Don’t let your family or your country down. Most of you, don’t let yourself down. Make us all proud. 16min Barack Obama

2. 11.18 http://www.24en.com/subject/speech/2012-07-26/147424.html I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today! Martin Luther King, Jr.

Visual skills Eyes: Look forward at audience. Don’t shift eyeballs, don’t look in corner. Body: Stand up when talking Walk around

Visual skills Hands: Make gestures Face: Show emotion

Have a try! 3.46 If you don’t like me, I won’t be here forever. If you don’t like this government, it won’t last forever. But if you leave the UK, that will be forever. Don’t lose faith in what this country is and what we can be. Don’t forget what a great United Kingdom you are part of.

Don’t turn your backs on what is the best family of nations in the word and the best hope for your family in this world. So please, from all of us: Vote to stick together. Vote to stay. Vote to save our United Kingdom. David Cameron
