Short story elements “The Monkey’s Paw”

Objectives I can… identify the mood of a short story by analyzing the author's use of words/phrases. determine the resolution of a short story by analyzing the events and character actions in the stories.

mood Mood is the feeling or atmosphere the writer creates for the reader.

POINT OF VIEW 1st person: character tells the story, I, me 2nd person: “You” tell the story, you, understood 3rd person limited: outside observer, know one character’s feelings, thoughts and/or actions 3rd person omniscient: outside observer, know more than one character’s feelings, thoughts and/or actions

Identify Type of Narrator An objective narrator reports events in a factual way, without sharing any characters’ hidden thoughts or feelings. A subjective narrator recounts events with a character’s thoughts, feelings, and observations.

Question 5 Decide whether Herbert’s death is due to Fate or Coincidence. Using specific examples from the story, write two paragraphs defending your decision about the cause of his death.

If you were to change the monkey’s paw to another item, what would it be? Draw and color a picture of your new item with a description of why it would be better to fit the plot of the story than the monkey’s paw.

Monkey’s paw Pretend you were asked to give input for a tv show based on the story. Write a memo (half to full page) to the director suggesting ways to create the proper mood. Suggest a location, actors, and music that will help create the mood. Give reasons for your choices.
