Creating Sustainable Schools Dr. Pavlos Rigas Maria Vasiliou (MA) A Comenius Programme (Multilateral Partnership) coordinated by Cyprus, with partners from Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Finland and France

Knowledge Game – Sustainable Pursuit Process: Phase A (last year) (a) The students were informed about the creation of a knowledge game. (b) They were asked to propose knowledge games that they knew – most of them proposed the game, Trivial Pursuit. (c) The students brought to school different versions of the game (for kids and for adults). (d) After a discussion with the teachers they decided to make similar cards and propose a completely different way of playing. (e) The students proposed questions for the first (consumerism and reducing waste) and the second (restructuring the surroundings of the school) theme.

Knowledge Game – Sustainable Pursuit Process: Phase B (this year) The students that worked last year graduated from primary school so this year the new sixth formers are going to work on the game. (a) The teachers informed the students of what was done last year. (b) The students brought to school the game Trivial Pursuit and after a discussion they realised why the only similarity should be the creation of the cards. (c) The students discussed with the teachers the ideas they had in mind about the rules and the playing board of the game and they started working!

Knowledge Game – Sustainable Pursuit Process: Phase C (this year) Creation of the playing board (a) The students discussed with the teachers how should the playing board look like. They decided that it should be a spiral, divided into colourful sections, presenting the 4 different themes of the project. The spiral is situated in the middle of planet Earth and its center represents sustainability. (b) Outside planet Earth, there are 2 positions where the players can find the cards and the bonus cards. The 9 non-sustainable monsters are situated in space, threatening planet Earth. Each monster holds the flag of the country that created it.

Knowledge Game – Sustainable Pursuit Process: Phase D (this year) General information: Number of players: 1 – 9 (it can also be played by 1 – 9 teams) Proposed age: 9 – 15 years old Common aim: To reach sustainability which is placed at the center of the board Materials: playing board, pawns, dice, cards (with questions concerning the 3 themes of the game), bonus cards

Knowledge Game – Sustainable Pursuit Process: Phase D (this year) Rules: All players (or teams) place their pawns (characteristic monuments of the nine countries) at the starting point. All players throw the dice and the player with the highest outcome begins first. Players proceed on the playing board based on the dice outcome. The playing board is divided into colourful sections, each colour representing a different category of questions. Each player answers the question from the appropriate category based on the position of his pawn on the playing board.

Knowledge Game – Sustainable Pursuit Process: Phase D (this year) Rules: Every correct answer gives the right to the players to throw the dice and proceed according to the outcome of the dice. If the correct answer concerns a bonus card, then the players can move one extra place than the outcome of the dice. For every wrong answer the players miss their turn. The player or team who reaches the center of the playing board (sustainability position) first, is the winner of the game.
