Kneeling During the Anthem English 2

Colin Kaepernick Colin Kaepernick is an NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. On August 26 during a game with the Green Bay Packers, rather than standing during the National Anthem, Kaepernick kneeled.

Colin Kaepernick He said he was “not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” He also said, “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Entire Indiana Fever Team Kneels for the Anthem Professional, college, and even high school players have joined the protest. Watch this newscast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2WslZUBYsg Indiana Fever is a professional basketball team.

A Few Numbers… Black people are 2.5 times more likely than white people to be killed by police officers. Since Kaepernick’s protest began, 67 people have been killed by the police. 22% were black. It’s been 1 month. In 2016, the police have killed over 780 people; 25% of them were black. Black people are about 13% of the US population.

Public response The public response to this protest has been mixed. Some people support kneeling during the anthem as a legitimate way to bring attention to an important issue. Some argue that kneeling during the anthem is disrespectful to the flag, or even to military troops and veterans.

RAW Book Is kneeling during the anthem disrespectful? Why / why not? Write at least ¾ of a page.
