Angelos Vazakidis and Ioannis Politis 1-3 June 2016 Technopolis Gazi, Athens, Greece How a Narcissistic Personality is dealing with Sustainable Mobility? A behavioural inventory analysis towards the intention to increase Public Transport share Angelos Vazakidis and Ioannis Politis Civil Engineering Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Focus Session D: Changing Attitudes and Behavior D-1: New Approaches in Understanding Behavior

Predictions about choices, demand etc The Fact… “ ….user specific attributes are gaining more attention in the planning process instead of mode specific attributes….” Safety Security Comfort Predictions about choices, demand etc

Which user specific attributes?… Feelings Preferences Motives Intentions Habits Goals Wife preferences (!)

What about narcissism?… Beautiful Clever Best from all others Number one What about travel behavior?

Narcissistic Behavior… Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder, characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. those with NPD generally have poor insight into their condition and may not acknowledge that their behavior causes problems for others or for themselves. It is estimated that NPD affects up to 6% of the population First formulated in 1968, NPD was historically called megalomania, and is a form of severe egocentrism Different methodologies for subtype categorization (unprincipled, amorous, compensatory, elitistic, malignant, grandiose, vulnerable)

Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI-40)… Developed by Raskin and Hall (1979) for the measurement of narcissism as a personality trait in social psychological research. A set of 40 pairs of statements (answered with yes or no) Scores >20 indicates a narcissistic personality Identifies 7 subtypes of narcissistic behavior Authority Superiority Exhibitionism Entitlement Vanity Exploitaviness Self-sufficiency

Our Research… Questionnaire of 40+27 questions Randomly delivered to Greek population Objective: to relate the Narcissistic behavior with travel intentions (primarily to use PuT) 157 questionnaires were collected Descriptive and inferential statistic tests were performed Factor analysis was applied to identify the latent constructs Structural Equation Models were developed to examine the relations of the latent constructs

Main findings (in brief)… Narcissism level higher compare to the literature (11.5% compare to 6.2%) Men were found to have higher narcissistic levels compare to women Narcissistic behavior related to the age levels (up to 40 years old) The “entitlement” was found to be a statistically important narcissistic subcategory related with the intention to use Public Transport (negative correlated) Finally, the intention to use public transport, the economic background and the subcategory “superiority” were found important parameters for public transport preference

Challenging topics to deliver… What role traffic psychology can play in mobility management in the near future? How difficult is to integrate a theoretical discipline (phycology) with a practical one (engineering)? What are the main subtopics that EU should focus on? (behavioral change, monitoring, ICT and travel behavior big data, MaaS etc) How SUMPs should integrate the concept of behavioral change? How policy makers (and takers) are dealing with the issue Funding opportunities for research and applications?
