Constantine, Justinian and split in Christianity Byzantine Empire Constantine, Justinian and split in Christianity

Why was the Byzantine capital of Constantinople important at the time?

List two differences between the Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire.

What was the purpose of the Theodosian Walls? Were they effective?

Who was Justinian? Why was he successful? Determined to re-establish the Roman Empire in the entire Mediterranean World. Brought prosperity to the empire Massive building projects Expanded empire’s borders Codified Roman Law  The Body of Civil Law became the basis of the European legal system (even gave rights to women!)

The crowning achievement of Justinian’s building program – the Hagia Sophia! This cathedral was the center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Rule of Justinian (& wife Theodora) Although his reforms were successful, they came at a cost… Bankrupted the treasury = economy in decline Too much territory to protect Corruption and brutality in his rule  Discuss video ? #8! Renewed threats to its frontiers Problems continued after his death…for the next 700 years!

What was the biggest threat to Byzantine rule after Justinian’s death? THE SPREAD OF ISLAM!!!

Fall of the Byzantine Empire Their military, political and religious strength threatened Muslims who ruled the Middle East  Crusades! During the Fourth Crusade, the Muslims took Constantinople and invaded the Byzantine Empire. Despite the efforts to re-establish the empire, Muslims took control of Byzantine states during the 15th century, eventually leading to its decline.

Finish Byzantine Empire Wkst! Pages 194-197 We will also finish “Engineering an Empire: The Byzantines.” Be ready to discuss tomorrow!
