Objective 1 Determine whether an ordered pair is a solution for a linear inequality with two variables.

Checking an Ordered Pair Replace the variables with the corresponding values Is the inequality true? Yes: the point is a solution No: the point is not a solution

Is (3, –5) a solution for y  3x + 4. y  3x + 4 – 5  3(3) + 4 –5  9 + 4 –5  13 This statement is true, so (3, –5) is a solution. Replace x with 3 and y with 5.

Is (-1, 1) a solution for y > -x + 2. 1 > -(-1) + 2 1 > 1 + 2 1 > 3 This statement is false, so (-1, 1) is not a solution.
