Group Manager – PXI™/VXI Software What’s New in VXI? Scott Kovner Group Manager – PXI™/VXI Software Fri Aug 18 12:00-1:15 p.m., 3:30-4:45 p.m. Ash (10A) What’s New in VXI?

Agenda Current VXI hardware offering Current VXI controller software New software – NI-VXI™ 3.0 New hardware What’s New in VXI?

Hardware Overview Embedded controllers Remote controllers VXIpc™ VXI controllers are either embedded controllers or remote controllers. Embedded controller products are PCs designed to fit directly into a VXI chassis. With remote controllers, you can control a VXI chassis over a connection bus. MXI™-2, GPIB, or IEEE 1394 What’s New in VXI?

Embedded Controllers VXIpc-870 Series – dual slot, very high performance VXIpc-740 Series – single slot, economical VXI/VMEpc™-650 Series – B size controllers What’s New in VXI?

VXIpc-870 Embedded Controller Desktop PC in a 2 slot VXI chassis Pentium III, 450 MHz PCI expansion slot or internal CD-ROM Complete peripheral set GPIB, parallel port, 2 serial ports, 2 USB ports, 10/100BaseT Ethernet, Ultra Wide SCSI-3, keyboard & mouse ports, PC card, floppy 3 SMB connections for trigger and external clock routing VXI MITE™ ASIC What’s New in VXI?

The VXI MITE Chip Core technology for MXI, VXI, and PCI DMA controller Fast block moves FIFO access Synchronous MXI protocol Shared VXI memory (SIMM or system RAM) Multiple address windows to VXI VME64 And more… The MITE is a high-speed bus interface ASIC with built-in support for VXI, MXI, PCI, and general-purpose asynchronous and I/O buses. It has DMA controllers for moving data quickly between the ports. The MITE can also use new, faster protocols for accessing blocks of data. What’s New in VXI?

VXIpc-740 and VXIpc-745 Single slot, economical choice for VXI embedded control 100 MHz 486 processor Both have keyboard port, serial port, floppy, PC card slots VXIpc-745 also has GPIB, Ethernet VXI MITE ASIC What’s New in VXI?

VXI/VMEpc-650 series Embedded controllers for B size VXI or VME 2 slot, 6U height 233 or 166 MHz Pentium Peripherals 10/100BaseT Ethernet, Ultra Wide SCSI, GPIB, two USB ports, two serial ports, parallel port, floppy, mouse and keyboard ports VXI MITE ASIC What’s New in VXI?

Remote VXI Controllers PCI-MXI-2 – highest overall performance of any remote control solution for VXI VXI-1394, VXI-1394/G – convenient, economical control of VXI (and GPIB) GPIB-VXI – add VXI frames to GPIB systems, affordably What’s New in VXI?

PCI-MXI-2 DMA PCI-MXI-2 VXI-MXI-2 (32-bit) (64/32-bit) PCI MXI-2 VXI MXI-2 is National Instruments “bus-on-a-cable” technology for controlling a VXI system. Because of the direct mapping of register accesses from the PC to the VXI bus, MXI-2 provides the fastest accesses times for individual register accesses. MXI-2 also has a fast protocol for bursting blocks of data, called the Synchronous MXI protocol. This protocol can sustain 22 MB/s on the MXI-2 bus, although the end-to-end performance depends on many system integration factors (bridge chip, types of instruments, and so on). What’s New in VXI? 18

VXI-1394 IEEE 1394 serial data data Create packet Decode packet IEEE 1394 Host Adapter VXI-1394 IEEE 1394 PCI VXI serial (32-bit) (32-bit) PC Memory VXI Memory The VXI-1394 uses the convenient IEEE 1394 bus to control a VXI chassis. IEEE 1394 is a serial bus with fairly good burst data rates. Because of the levels of translation required for IEEE 1394 packets, this bus is not suited for applications that require fast register access times. However, the VXI-1394 can be an effective solution for applications that need to move blocks of data using a simple cabling solution. In order to provide better performance for the register intensive Word Serial protocol, the VXI-1394 has an onboard microcontroller that translates between IEEE 1394 data streams and instrument messages. data data header data header data Create packet Decode packet What’s New in VXI?

GPIB-VXI PCI-GPIB GPIB-VXI/C “*IDN?” (32-bit) (8-bit) PCI GPIB VXI Many of the early VXI systems used GPIB-VXI interface cards as the system controller. GPIB-VXI controllers make your VXI instruments appear as stand-alone GPIB instruments. To write application software for these systems, you can use the same NI-488™-based software you use to program monolithic GPIB instruments. Although there are attractive programming benefits to using GPIB-VXI interface cards for VXI system control, data throughput rates realized using this approach are much slower than embedded VXI controllers or MXI. The GPIB-VXI is appropriate for systems with mostly message-based devices. What’s New in VXI? 14

NI-VXI is available on… Windows 2000/NT/ME/9X – all controllers Linux – PCI-MXI-2, PXI-MXI-2, VXIpc-870 Solaris 2.x – PCI-MXI-2, PXI-MXI-2 Mac OS 9 – PCI-MXI-2 VxWorks – VXIpc HP-UX 10.20 – PCI-MXI-2 NI-VXI works on many platforms, although not every controller works on every operating system. For example, Windows 95 does not handle IEEE 1394, so the VXI-1394 is not supported under Windows 95. Please check for driver availability for your platform of choice. What’s New in VXI?
