RESE-1031 Thematic Impendent Studies Lecture 3 - Essay 2 Suggested structure

Essay Types TIS Essay 1 TIS Essay 2 Describe, Define, Discuss Analogy Comparison, contrast Analysis Argument Opinion TIS Essay 1 TIS Essay 2

The two essays Essay 1 Essay 2 Descriptive Places topic in context (for purposes of expansion in essay 2) Not essential it has an argument Essay 2 Analytical Critical Needs an argument Needs to demonstrate you think independently

Critique and Analysis Analysis is a way of exploring something by breaking it down into its constituent parts. Critique is a process of evaluating a subject in a way that… questions deeply goes beyond a surface understanding Questions its logic or assumptions Looks for strengths and limitations Critique is not necessarily negative

An essay’s argument Usually reliant on both analysis and critique Tries to persuade the reader of something Will usually either: discuss a topic from two sides and present evidence of each side in order to then identify the stronger of the two sides, or Present an opinion or position about something and present a case of evidence to support that opinion.

A suggested plan for essay 2… Introduction (300 words ~ 2-3 paragraphs) Body Sub-theme one (1000 words ~ 5-6 paragraphs) Transition (100 words ~ 1-2 paragraphs) Sub-theme two (1000 words ~ 5-6 paragraphs) Sub-theme three (1000 words ~ 5-6 paragraphs) Conclusion of argument (500 words ~ 4 paragraphs)

Introduction States the intent of the essay Explains structure (i.e. sub-themes) Explains the outcome of the argument or critique presented You may refer to Essay #1 using third person: “This essay continues the topic discussed in the previous essay by…”

Sub-theme 1: If you got a good mark in the essay #1… It is suggested that you continue into sub-theme 1 without restating much of the material from the essay #1 If your essay #1 scored poorly… It is suggested that you use sub-theme 1 to summarise the main contextual elements discussed in essay #1

Essay 2 Conclusion Ensure you state your argument clearly and explain something like: Why a previous understanding of a subject is wrong? Why people should question the assumptions behind something more closely? Why there is not a clear understanding of something?

Key “Do’s and Don’ts”: Do Don’t Write essay #2 so that it can be marked independently of essay #1. Draft the essay. Funnel information to build the argument Proofread and use referencing (i.e. Harvard style with bibliography AND in-text referencing) Don’t Use primary data Use (non-peer reviewed) internet materials Rely too heavily on one source
