Defining characters’ objectives In othello

Objective: What a character is after in that scene—the goal. * If s/he doesn’t reach it one way, s/he will try another. * After each attempt, there is a “beat change,” a shifting of gears. * When the character achieves his/her objective, there is a beat change, after which s/he has a new objective.

Superobjective: What a character means to have by the end of the play.

Ms. Preusser’s objective vs superobjective: Objective: My goal for today’s class is for students to be able to identify and describe a character’s objective and superobjective. Superobjective: My goal for this school year is to help students become critical and analytical thinkers, readers, and writers. (And to search and destroy comma splices!)

Your objective vs superobjective: Objective: What is your goal for today? Superobjective: What is your goal for this school year?

Your turn: Othello log #4 In your Othello log, identify the objective and superobjective for each of the following characters in Act 3, scene 4: * Iago * Emilia * Othello * Desdemona * Cassio

Iago’s objective vs superobjective in Act 3, scene 4: Objective: To convince Cassio to talk to Desdemona in front of Othello. *Beat change.* To plant seeds of worry in Emilia’s ear. Superobjective: To take Othello down from the inside out.

Your turn: Othello log #4 In your Othello log, identify the objective and superobjective for each of the following characters in Act 3, scene 4: * Emilia * Othello * Desdemona * Cassio
