Types of Imperialism Settlement colonies- Large groups of people from one country living together in a new country or territory.

Examples of Settlement colonies Australia In 1788, 11 ships containing around 1350 people from Great Britain arrived in Australia.

Dependent Colonies A few European officials ruling over the non-European inhabitants. Example India Great Britain had been trading through British East India Co. since 1600’s. In 1757 the Br. East India Co. defeated a weakened Mughal Empire at the battle of Plessey In 1858 British gov’t. took direct command of India due to Sepoy uprising and ruled until 1947.

Protectorates Territories where local rulers kept their title, and handled domestic affairs, but the Europeans controlled all foreign policy and had a large military presence in the area.

Examples of Protectorates Afghanistan- British controlled until 1919. Why? Strategic position to help protect interests in India. Morocco-French granted control by besieged Sultan, whose people turned against him and fought for independence. Why? To expand their territory in North Africa.

Spheres of Influence An area in which one nation has a special interest. Legal agreements made between nations promised to not interfere with each other’s actions in these spheres of influence.
