Why did Spain want to establish a colony in Florida? To prevent the French and the English from gaining a foothold

What were Pedro Menendez Aviles’ goals in Florida? To find and defeat the French and take control of Florida

How would you describe the land Spain found in New Mexico? Dry, grassland that was not good for farming.

How would you describe a Hacienda? A large self-sufficient estate where native Americans worked.

Why did the Pueblo Indians revolt against the Spanish? The Pueblo were being mistreated by the Spanish

How did the Spanish use the presidios they built in New Mexico? The presidios were used to protect the missions they built to convert the Native American to Christianity.

What did the Spanish do once they returned to New Mexico? The Spanish continued to expand their lands. They established new settlements in present-day Texas and Arizona that they hoped would help them keep control over the Southwest.

How did Pontiac’s Rebellion affect the colonists? The Proclamation of 1763 was enacted. To attempt to halt future Native American rebellions, it tried to stop settlers from settling on land west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Explain the difference between a small-scale map and a large-scale map. A small-scale map shows a larger area, for example, a state map is a small-scale map. A large-scale map show a smaller area with more detail.

Why did the French and British both believe they had claims to the Ohio River Valley? The French believed the had a claim because La Salle claimed the Mississippi River and all its tributaries for France. The British had established settlements and built farms and they thought this gave them claim.

What were the benefits that resulted from the relationship between the French and the Native Americans? The French and Native Americans traded good, which is beneficial for both sides. The Native Americans also taught the French how to make birch bark canoes and snowshoes, and the Native Americans told the French about The Mississippi River
