Presentation transcript:

The essentials you will need to launch your new career.

WHAT A GOOD EMPLOYER LOOKS FOR Self Starters: Don’t wait to be asked. Decision Makers: Learn to think on your feet. Team Players: What position will you play? Positive Attitudes: The glass must be half full at all times. Dependability: Either you are or you aren’t. Low Maintenance: Is the boss happy with his/her hiring choice? Extra Milers: These people stick out in the crowd.

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD Admit Mistakes: It is OK, you won’t lose your job. Don’t Be Afraid To Say, “I’m Sorry”: Shows others that you are genuine. Don’t Fake It If You Don’t Know The Answer: You have more credibility if you simply say, “I don’t know.”

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD Smile: It’s contagious and body language speaks louder than words. Proof and Correct Everything Before Sending It Out: Your mistakes in writing are never erased. Don’t Watch The Clock: It’s not going anywhere.

MAKE YOURSELF INVALUABLE Make Everyone A Hero: You then become a success. Think Like The Boss: Learn the “hot buttons” and don’t push them.

6 CAREER KILLERS Ego: It will get in the way. Dishonesty: It will not be tolerated. Negativity and Whining: No one wants to hear it. Substance Abuse: Don’t even think about it. Selfishness: Everyone around you will see this. Low Self-Esteem: Self motivation is an integral part of your success.

6 CAREER BOOSTERS Continuing Education: The learning never stops. Community Involvement/Volunteering: Appreciate what you have by giving to your community. Involvement With Professional Organizations: Networking is essential to building a career. Surrounding Yourself With Good People: You are a reflection of your staff. A Spouse, Partner, Significant Other or Good Friend Who Supports You: There will be times when you can’t do it alone. Excellent Service - A Commitment to Getting Things Done Right and On Time: Professionalism is a must.

THE FIRST YEAR SURVIVAL KIT Be a good listener: You won’t have all the answers. Be a good student: You need to keep up with your co-workers. Find a mentor: This will be the secret to your long term success.

Now, pack up your “gear” and go get ‘em.
