Current Trends in CTE: CTE Focused Endorsements In addition, a number of states developed CTE-focused endorsements for their high school diplomas, including Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Wisconsin. North Carolina took some financial burden off of students who are seeking industry certifications and credentials. Under SB402, students enrolled in public schools and in CTE courses are exempt from paying fees for one administration of an exam that leads to an industry certification or a credential. Also under this bill, schools will now receive one point per student (toward the School Achievement Score) enrolled in CTE coursework who earns a Silver, Gold or Platinum level on a national work readiness assessment, although this still needs to be reviewed by the General Assembly in collaboration with the Department of Public Instruction and is subject to change. The North Carolina State Board of Education approved a set of endorsements for their high school graduation requirements, first mandated under legislation that passed in early 2013. Specifically, students can earn the Career Endorsement, one of two College Endorsements and/or the Academic Scholars Endorsement. All four endorsements require students to complete the Future-Ready Core requirements in math (which are aligned to the Common Core State Standards) and earn at least a 2.6 GPA (which guarantees graduates’ placement into credit bearing courses at the state’s community colleges). Students earning a Career Endorsement must complete a CTE concentration, earn an industry- recognized credential and take a fourth year of math aligned to their post-high school plans.

Current Trends in CTE: Alternative Certifications Last year, North Carolina and Virginia created licenses that allow technical workers to teach part time. People from industry in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and Ohio already have a similar option. In the Advance CTE survey, directors of state career and technical education programs ranked alternatives to traditional teacher certifications as the most successful strategy for getting people from industry into the classroom There has been a shortage of CTE Teachers in most states and also in North Carolina. There have been many states that allowed technical workers to teach in the part time, just to have technical workers in the classroom. In the advance CTE Survey, directors of state CTE Education Programs thought it was a great strategy.

Current Trends in North Carolina: Rise of Charter Schools When Republicans took control of the legislature in 2011, they lifted the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in the state and began in 2013 a program that provides taxpayer funding to help some families attend private schools. As a result, charter schools statewide have added more new students since 2011 than traditional public schools. The voucher program helped reverse a statewide decline in enrollment in private schools. The state helped provide taxpayers funding to help some families attend private schools, which allowed for the rise of charter schools. There has been more new students in charter schools than traditional public schools.

Things I wish would happen more Schools also can expand CTE instruction without hiring more teachers. They might partner with community colleges to allow students to take technical classes there for both college and high school credit. Youth apprenticeships Evolving from separate programs this takes place in South Carolina, Kentucky Support and incentivize business-education partnerships and work-based learning In Tennessee, they use Department-promoted industry certifications that is a representative of the learning a student has mastered through the successful completion of an aligned CTE course and/or program of study. I wish this Youth Apprenticeship Program would be in more states. I think students would love making money while also learning on the job.

Three Strategies to use Funding is a barrier that I wish that I could change in my region. I would look for grants, that could possible help with funding of teachers. I would look for donations, Charter Schools. I would be truthful and talk to parents about why my cte school would be right for them. I would up our marketing of our school and I would have go different schools such as daycares promoting my cte school. I would have career project based learning in the classroom. I would improve career project based learning , with connecting with local businesses and leaders in the community.
