Gas Exchange in Mammals L2 Biology

Requirements for all gas exchange systems Allows the gases to get to and from the cells Keeps the gas exchange surfaces moist A large surface area: volume ratio Concentration gradient maintained Thin membrane (easier gas movement) Permeable membrane that allows the dissolved gases to pass freely but not water or other chemicals Protection (from internal and external environment) Support (from other parts of body, ribs etc) Allows safe and clean air to get to the gas exchange tissues

Inhalation Exhalation Expiration Inspiration Ventilation Breathing Inhalation Exhalation Expiration Inspiration Ventilation

Diffusion Oxygen Carbon dioxide Gas Exchange Diffusion Oxygen Carbon dioxide
