The Coming Crisis….. It is already here Official shortage Reached epidemic proportion Schools rescheduling or canceling games Clubs being fined Two articles address this issue: The crisis threatening high school sports you may not be aware of http://footballscoop.com/news/crisis-threatening-high-school-sports-may-not-aware/ The Officiating Crisis: What Can I Do? http://nfhs.org/articles/the-officiating-crisis-what-can-i-do/

The Coming Crisis….. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, only 20 percent of referees return for their third year on the job The issues, according to the NFSHA and outlined by LoHud: officials feel they’re underpaid lots of officials are nearing retirement age at the same time, younger people that would usually be drawn to officiating are gravitating toward other things a boom in travel and club teams the “culture of abuse” officials have to endure just do to the job

The Coming Crisis….. In the middle of August, I was at a football officiating camp. I observed an assistant football coach go off the rails on an official eight snaps into the scrimmage. There were officials there who had never put air in a whistle or throw a flag, trying to learn. To see an adult start screaming at another adult over what he thought was a missed call in a scrimmage was a poignant example of why we have the problems we do. Officials WILL miss calls. They are human beings. I don’t know a coach who has made every correct play call and every correct substitution in every game. I don’t know a player who has completed every pass or made every basket every single game. Officials are expected to be perfect when they walk in and improve as the night goes on. Why is there such a high degree of scrutiny with one group when everyone else is allowed to make errors without being screamed at?

Give them what the earn Works both positively and negatively Thank the player, coach for good sportsmanship, kind acts, fair play Do not be afraid to issue a red card when earned: Abusive language directed to any opponent (player, coach, spectator) Excessive foul Do not be afraid to eject a coach or spectator using the Ask, Tell, Remove protocol Public Persistent Personal
