SEAWATER DESALINATION – THE ANSWER FOR BOTTLING COMPANIES

Seawater desalination has been an answer to almost every industry for their water requirements. Today the technology is used to provide water to people for drinking purposes. This happens in every corner of the world while bottling companies keep on extracting water from natural resources further driving it to exploitation.

After the recent news of conflict between Nestle and community in two Canadian towns, a question in front of many is whether the money is more important that environment. Desalination technologies are still not used by bottling companies as it takes too much money to build and maintain one such plant. This increases manufacturing costs leading to fewer profits.

But how long can the companies keep using natural reserves to satisfy the public demand is a question to think about. Even though bottling companies won’t consider it, here is why seawater desalination is the answer for a future in the industry.

■Setting up a factory on the coasts eliminates the question of water as the oceans have an abundance of it. ■The technology is expensive to use but also the regulations for the terms of usage are more flexible compared to the ones in nature reserve.

■The cost of setting up this plant is more but over the years the fees of compensation to get access to natural reserves will increase tremendously. This is due to the ill-effects of exploiting precious reserves. ■The increasing conflicts worldwide can lead to complete elimination of bottling companies from communities in the future. The companies, therefore, must have a good plan to keep the brand afloat. ■Avoiding such a conflict also helps you keep your brand’s goodwill intact with the communities.

Although it is a solution for the supply of water, one other point for the companies to contemplate on is the matter of plastic bottles. 480 billion plastic bottles were sold last year as opposed to 300 billion a decade ago.

This has led to an abrupt increase in plastic bottles in oceans and landfills. We will have to put our energy and money into the research of recyclable plastic or material that does not threaten our environment.
