Field Umpire Coaching Thursday, 14th April

Siren sounds as ball is kicked, what would you do?

AFL Law 10.4: Bringing Play to an End Law 10.4.2 Play comes to an end when one of the field umpires hears the siren. Law 10.4.3 The field umpire signals they have heard the siren by raising two arms above their head. If the Field Umpire is of the opinion a free kick or mark occurred prior to hearing the siren it will be paid. A free kick will not be awarded where the football has been kicked and after the field umpire has heard the siren the ball lands out of bounds on the full

Question? When can a free kick be paid after the siren?

AFL Law 12.6: Free kick after play has ended 12.6.1 Before Kick or in the Act of Kicking After a field umpire has signalled that play has come to an end, any field umpire may award a free kick to any player when a player is preparing to kick or is in the act of kicking for goal

AFL Law 12.6: Free kick after play has ended 12.6.2 After the Kick After a field umpire has signalled that play has come to an end, any field umpire may award a free kick to any player during the period when a player has kicked for goal and the football is in transit or during the period when a player has kicked a goal or behind but before the field umpire has signalled ‘All Clear’.

Runners, Trainers & Water Carriers AFL Vic Rule 17.2 The sole duty of the runner is to confer with the player or players of his/her club and to immediately leave the playing arena. Sole duty of a water carrier is to convey water to players and immediately leave the playing area. Sole duty of a trainer is to render medial assistance and convey water as required

Free Kick against an Official AFL Law 15.10.1(b) A free kick will be paid against an official of the team or person who is permitted onto the playing surface who intentionally or carelessly interferes with the football, a player from the opposition, an umpire or general play. AFL Victoria Rule 17.2 The field umpire on infringement of this rule may order the offending official from the arena for a period of 15 minutes. Any reportable incident will be reported as per a player.

Question of the Week A player gets hit in the head 25m out from their goal and is paid a free kick. The siren sounds just after the free kick is paid to end the quarter. The player who is preparing to take the kick is actively bleeding from the head. Can this player still take the kick at goal after the siren?

Question of the Week - Answer Yes – Law 22.7 A player awarded a mark or free kick may kick the football after the field umpire has signalled that play has come to an end, even though he is at the time actively bleeding
