Title 1 Reading Towslee Grades K-3 October 11, 2017 First Nine Weeks Mrs. Linden Title 1 Reading Towslee Grades K-3 klinden@bcsoh.org (330) 273-0487 Title 1 News First Grade News The first graders have been very busy working on a consonant digraph unit. They have mastered the sounds that ch, sh, and th make. They even know the difference between the hard th and the soft th. We have read stories and poems that showcase these sounds and worked with many word sorts. We have spent a lot of time on word work and writing complete sentences. The students are using finger tapping and sound lines to help them spell words. In class. we spend a lot of time reading sight words. These are words that do not always follow the rules and the students cannot use their reading strategies to read these words. These words are frequently used in books, which is why it is so important for them to memorize them. Students will be bringing home a Rapid Word Chart in their homework folders to practice these words. The goal is to be able to read these words quickly. When reading this chart, the student should read each word. If they read a word incorrectly, they need to go back to the beginning and start reading. News From Kindergarten The Kindergartners have been working very hard on learning their letters and sight words. We are following the Orton-Gillingham sequence with letter identification. They have worked with c, o, a, d, this nine weeks. The students are doing an excellent job learning all of the letters. We will continue working on the first quarter sight words into the second nine weeks. Please, try to practice these words. Sight words need to be memorized because many of them are rule breakers, and we cannot sound them out. Conferences are quickly approaching. I will be available on November 7 for conferences. If I am not in your child’s classroom during your conference, feel free to stop in room 80 to meet me. A big thank you to all of the parents who have set up their accounts for Seesaw. I am so excited to use this in the classroom. I am trying to have each student post something at least once a week. Please let me know if you need help setting up your account. IMPORTANT INFO

First Nine Weeks Newsletter October 22. 2015 Mrs. Linden Towslee Grades K-3 klinden@bcsoh.org (330) 273-0487 First Nine Weeks Newsletter Second grade news The second graders are working hard to increase their reading fluency. We are using repeated readings as a way to help improve our fluency. We read a passage on Monday, practice it all week, and then read it again on Friday. The students are excited to see how many more words they read on Friday. We are increasing their words read per minute and confidence in their reading skills. Third Grade News The third graders began the year reading one of my favorite stories, A Dog’s Best Friend. We read this story to help us analyze the characters in the story and to understand how suffixes are added to words to change the meaning. They are learning the different syllable types to help them chunk words. As the text gets harder, they are reading words with more than one syllable. If they understand syllable types, then they know how to read the vowel in each syllable. Title 1 News Homework Folders. Homework Folders will go home every Friday. Please help your child return these on Thursday or Friday each week. The students need to remove everything on the keep at home side. Those papers do not need to be returned to school. The only thing that should be in their folders upon returning to school is their homework. Even if they do not have time to complete the homework, students should still return the folders. Leave the unfinished work in the folder, and they can complete it when they have time to do it. Conferences are quickly approaching. I will be available on both conference nights, October 30 and November 3. Please, stop by my room after you have met with your child’s teacher Students are rewarded for completing work in their Homework Folders. They receive punches on their punch card anytime they return something in their folder. When they earn 10 punches, they can turn their punches in for a coupon card. Students are not penalized for not completing work, but are only rewarded for completing work. ** Please refer to the I Can Statements that were sent home with Progress Reports. That will let you know how your child scored with each learning target. IMPORTANT INFO
