Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Maturation Hello my name is Carrie Ann Kemp and I would like to welcome you all today’s presentation. Thank you parents for coming to this presentation on maturation. We sincerely hope that this presentation will be helpful to your fifth graders and facilitate family conversations on this topic. Maturation became an official part of the elementary health curriculum approximately 20 years ago (1997). According to state rule the goal of maturation programs is to “convey accurate information regarding the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty, to assist in protecting students from abuse and to promote hygiene and good health practices.” This presentation falls squarely within the parameters of Utah’s Elementary Health Standards.

Being a girl ROCKS!!! Let’s talk Maturation.

the female reproductive system

The Menstrual Cycle The average cycle is 28 days but shorter or longer is normal too. It may be very irregular the first year you begin mentruating. Don’t worry. YOU ARE NORMAL!

SAnitary napkins or “Pads” Pads come in lots of sizes thicknesses and materials. Wear what feels the most comfortable for your body and clothing. Change every 2-3 hours.

How do I put on a Pad?

Panty liners! You might want to use panty liners if you have a lot of discharge.

Tampons A tampon comes in many different sizes and is inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual blood.

How do put in a tampon? To Insert a Tampon: Sit on the toilet Unwrap the tampon Exhale Gently insert the applicator into your vagina Push plunger upwards and tampon will advance Pull applicator and plunger out and throw away. A short string will remain hanging out. To Remove the tampon: Gently pull string until tampon is all the way out. Wrap tampon in toilet paper and put in trash. CHANGE EVERY 3-4 HOURS

The menstrual cup The menstrual cup can be worn for up to 12 hours. It is inserted like a tampon and cannot cause TSS. It’s AWESOME!

cramps When that uterus muscle starts to contract you get cramps. Some people don’t get them bad but other people do and some people don’t even get them at all. You want to get up and stretch or take a walk not curl up in a ball on the couch.

EVERY girl is amazing so just
