Presentation transcript:

Ultrasound Case: Rupture of Left Bicep Diagnosis: Complete Rupture of Left Bicep History: Patient felt a large pop and acute arm pain after lifting a box. Two days later, her arm became "black and blue". Findings: A longitudinal image along the groove of the biceps tendon shows abrupt termination of the biceps tendon (t) in its groove. The empty sheath beyond the tendon end is filled with fluid (**). B refers to the bone interface in the groove for the tendon, and DM refers to the deltoid muscle. Treatment: None Slide 1 of 3

Ultrasound Case: Rupture of Left Bicep Diagnosis: Complete Rupture of Left Bicep History: Patient felt a large pop and acute arm pain after lifting a box. Two days later, her arm became "black and blue". Findings: An extended field of view image showing the torn retracted long head (LH) of biceps muscle in long axis. Hematoma (H) surrounds the retracted ends of the muscle. SH refers to portions of the short head of the biceps seen in this view, which is intact. SQ refers to the subcutaneous fat. The extended field of view enables visualization of the muscle almost in its entirety, giving a better appreciation of the extent of the abnormality. The symbol "B" refers to the bone interface. . Treatment: None Slide 2 of 3

Ultrasound Case: Rupture of Left Bicep Diagnosis: Complete Rupture of Left Bicep History: Patient felt a large pop and acute arm pain after lifting a box. Two days later, her arm became "black and blue". Findings: A transverse (axial) image of the retracted biceps muscle. B refers to the bone interface of the humerus. H is the hematoma surrounding the retracted muscle. LH is the retracted long head of the biceps, and SH refers to the in tact short head of the biceps. Treatment: None Slide 3 of 3
