PROPHECY AND SCRIPTURE Lesson 10 for June 3, 2017

Jesus announced His coming and mission in His Word through prophets: “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1ª Corintios 15:3-4). After He ascended to Heaven, His disciples wrote about His work and teaching so we could know Jesus and surrender our lives to Him. The Bible and Jesus: The O.T. foretold the coming of Jesus. 1 Peter 1:10-12. The Bible testifies to Jesus. 2 Peter 1:16-18. The Bible leads us to Jesus. 2 Peter 1:19. The Bible and us: How to interpret the Bible. 2 Peter 1:20. How does the Bible change our lives? 2 Peter 1:21.

PROPHECIES ABOUT JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT “Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.” (1 Peter 1:10-11) They insulted Him because He trusted God Psalm 22:7-8 Matthew 27:43-44 They pierced His hands and feet Psalm 22:17 John 20:25 They divided His garments and cast lots for them Psalm 22:18 John 19:23-24 He was despised and rejected Isaiah 53:3 John 18:22 He healed the sick and the afflicted Isaiah 53:4 Matthew 8:16 He was severely punished Isaiah 53:5 Matthew 27:26-31 He took our sins on Him Isaiah 53:6 Hebrews 9:28

He remained silent before His accusers Isaiah 53:7 Matthew 27:12-14 They made His grave with the rich Isaiah 53:9 Mark 15:43-46 He was pierced Zechariah 12:10 John 19:34 His followers abandoned Him Zechariah 13:7 Mark 14:50 He was descendant of David Jeremiah 33:15 Matthew 1:1 He received control, glory and reign Daniel 7:13-14 Revelation 5:12 The prophecies that foretold Jesus’ life and work were fulfilled. Those that announced “the glories that would follow” (1P. 1:11) will be fulfilled too.

THE BIBLE TESTIFIES TO JESUS “For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.” (2 Peter 1:16) The Gospels tell the teachings and miracles of Jesus. When Peter wrote his letters, some of them were already spread among the believers as writings that were inspired by God. However, Peter wanted to strengthen the faith of those who hadn’t met Jesus by assuring that he witnessed what Jesus did, that he saw everything with his own eyes. Peter lived many good experiences with Jesus, and he chose one of them to share it in his letter: The Transfiguration. Peter heard the voice of the Father confirming His relationship with Jesus as the Son (Matthew 17:1-8).

THE BIBLE LEADS US TO JESUS “And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2 Peter 1:19) After sharing his testimony, Peter encouraged us to have that special relationship with Jesus by studying the Bible. Jesus is the light of the morning, the light that came to this world to rescue us from the darkness of sin (Revelation 22:16; John 3:19; 8:12). When we are receptive to God’s Word, we have a closer relationship with Jesus. Our hearts are filled with the light Jesus gives every day and we become the “light of the world” as a result (Matthew 5:14).

HOW TO INTERPRET THE BIBLE “knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation.” (2 Peter 1:20) What does “private interpretation” mean in the context of the prophecies? The prophets didn’t interpret their own prophecies, although some of them studied their meaning (1P. 1:10). We must let the Holy Spirit interpret the prophecies, since He inspired them (2P. 1:20). The Church as the body of believers must be guided by the Holy Spirit to a deep study of the prophecies, so they may come to an understanding on prophetic interpretation (2Tim. 4:3-4). Peter wanted to avoid any fantasy interpretation or wrong doctrines that could be used by “false teachers who will secretly bring in destructive heresies.” (2 Peter 2:1).

HOW DOES THE BIBLE CHANGE OUR LIVES? “for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21) The Bible is not a human-made book. The Holy Spirit worked through “holy men of God of God” who wrote it. Therefore, the Bible has a special power to transform the lives of those who study it with faith as Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:15-17: Transformation. It gives us wisdom for salvation and prepares us to do the good work. Doctrine. It’s useful to teach and to instruct in righteousness. Guide. It reproves us and corrects us. The Scriptures have a special power because we can know Jesus—our light and salvation— with the help of the Holy Spirit when we read them (John 5:39).

“The prophecies are to be studied, and the life of Christ compared with the writings of the prophets. He identifies Himself with the prophecies, stating over and over again, They wrote of Me; they testify of Me. The Bible is the only book giving a positive description of Christ Jesus; and if every human being would study it as his lesson book, and obey it, not a soul would be lost.” E.G.W. (Fundamentals of Christian Education, cp. 47, p. 382)
