Washington’s Role in the War He was 22 when he entered the war. Washington’s Early Life: Land surveyor since he was 15. His assignment in the war was to build a fort where the rivers meet to form the Ohio river. He led 150 men to build the Fort in the Ohio River Valley, but heard the French had just completed Fort Duquesne, at the very spot where Washington hoped to build his fort. Washington launched a surprise attack and scattered the French and he built Fort Necessity, however the French came back with 700 men and forced the Virginians to surrender. Washington was sent back home

Fort Necessity (present)

In 1755 Gen. Braddock(commander in chief of British army) led British and colonial troops back to Fort Duquesne. Braddock had little experience in fighting, and although he was warned by Washington and Indian allies not to go forward, he did anyway. half of the British army are killed at Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh, PA). This was a major defeat for the British. Fort Duquesne (present) General Braddock

Washington’s Role in the War Primary Source Early in the war, a small force of Native Americans and French routed an army led by Edward Braddock. George Washington later wrote of the defeat: “The Virginia troops showed a good deal of bravery, and were near all killed. For I believe out of three companies that were there, there are scarce 30 men left alive…The general (Braddock) was wounded; of which he died three days after. Sir Peter Halket was killed in the field, where died many other brave officers. I luckily escaped without a wound, though I had four bullets through my coat and two horses shot under me.” -George Washington- a letter to his mommy, 1755. What did this demonstrate about George Washington?

In 1759, Gen. James Wolfe captures the New France capital, Quebec with a surprise attack up steep cliffs along the St. Lawrence River.

Unfortunately, Wolfe was killed in battle, but not before being told the the British had won. Quebec was surrendered on September 18, 1759.

Albany Congress met in 1754 to discuss a stronger alliance with the Iroquois and a united colonial defense. Ben Franklin (Penn. Delegate) proposes Albany Plan of Union to create “one general government for 13 colonies to make laws, raise taxes and set up defense for the colonies.”

Ben Franklin publishes the first political cartoon to promote the Albany Plan of Union. Delegates vote to accept the plan, but it was not approved by any of the colonies.

War officially ends in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris, signed by England and France. Treaty of Paris 1763- ended French and Indian war, marked the end of French power in North America. French has no power in North America, Brit. gained Canada (eh?) and all Fr. lands east of the Mississippi, except New Orleans. Spain gave up Florida to Brit., but received all Fr. lands west of the Mississippi River, along with New Orleans.

The end of the war resulted in a large debt that the British Parliament decided would be repaid by imposing higher taxes on the American Colonies.

KNOW THIS!!!!! The conditions arising from the French and Indian War helped set the stage for the colonial revolt against the British. This is considered the first step of the American Revolution! ***DROPS MIC***
