Welcome to CESA Presentation to 3rd Regional Networking Forum Community Enterprise Support Association (CESA) Welcome to CESA Presentation to 3rd Regional Networking Forum 18-22 September 2016 C&C Resort Khao Yai, Subtai, Nakhonratchsima, Thailand Community-based Integrated Energy Initiatives – the way forward for Thailand and its Neighbours

CESA Background Energy & Environment Promotion CESA is a Cambodian NGO, localized from PDI-C in February 2015 Since January 2010, PDI-C have implemented the Village Development Partnership Project (VDP) in 2 Districts of Siem Reap Province in the North West of Cambodia. Our Goal: To increase our partner communities’ adaptation and resilience to climate change through socioeconomic enterprise development. The VDP is an Integrated Rural Development project focusing on 5 key areas: Community Empowerment Economic Development Energy & Environment Promotion Youth & Education Development Health Education & Improvement

Village Development Partnership CESA has worked with local communities, elected VDP Committees, Governments and NGOs Ministry of Rural Development to support implementation of Rural Health & Sanitation Project Ministry of Agriculture to support Bio-digester Construction Project. Angkor Hospital for Children to implement the Capacity Building for Health Education Project & Water For Life Project EGBOK Mission to support vocational skill training to youth as Hospitality & English Language

Challenges of Trees Cut in Communities 1- For Personnel and Community Purposes Community cooking Home cooking Housing Warming after giving birth Private bridge Fence making School Building Born till die, we need trees Community buildings

Huge destroyed under investment 2-generation period (70-99 years) 2- For Business For houses and fences Handicraft making Huge destroyed under investment 2-generation period (70-99 years) Slow growth but rapid destruction -10cm in diameter of tree spend 3-10year to grow. For brick factories

Solving through Village Development Bank (VDB) Capital ‘Earned’ through community actions 22,000 Tree’s Planted since 2011 & took care Village Cleaning Maternal/Child Health care visits to Health Clinic. Very low interest for business loans 6-m saving before loans Business & technical skills provided Profit reinvested with 20% contributed to Village Development Fund (VDF) Water & Sanitation Package 1,589 HHs with Latrines 1,611 HHs with Rainwater Harvesting Units 980 HHs with Bio-sand Filters

USE OF BIOGAS STOVE DURATION (HOUR) USE OF BIOGAS LAMP DURATION (HOUR) Another Renew Energy Project called “Green Loan for Bio-digester” is interested and encouraged farmers to apply What is Bio-digester? There are different types of bio-digester in use. The widely used model is the fixed dome digester buried under the ground. The fixed dome bio-digester consists of digester with a fixed non-moveable gasholder, which sits on top of the digester. In this biogas process, a source of renewable energy is generated such as methane (CH4), bio-slurry, gas for cooking, lightening and much more. The estimated costs of bio-digester depend on different sizes: BIO-DIGESTER SIZE (M3) TOTAL COST (US$) SUBSIDY FROM NBP (US$) FARMER  COST (US$) USE OF BIOGAS STOVE DURATION (HOUR) USE OF BIOGAS LAMP DURATION (HOUR) 4 550 150 400 2 - 4 8 - 16 6 620 470 4 - 6 16 - 24 8 720 570 6 - 8 24 - 32 10 800 650 8 - 10 32 - 40 15 1100 950 10 - 15 40 - 60

Bio-digester construction (37 constructed)  4m3 bio-digester total cost $550 (NBP supports $150 & construction technique). It is popular size and cost for community to choose. It is spent 5-7 day to construct.  For remaining $, she could assess Green Loan from VDB without interest rate.

Advantages of Bio-digester Busy Life (1F consist of 5-8pax); -1day/week to find wood -Sometimes to pay un-official and not secure -Spend 100-120$/y to buy fire wood. - Compare to huge destroying, it could help a little bit but it is better than not things. Happy Life; 1-Hygiene in the kitchen and Good environment and clean around house. 2-Save money 80-90%/y 3-Save time from collect fire wood 4-Save from Gov. forestry staff &/or harassments 5-Awareness spreading to neighbors & relatives 6-Lighten at night time 7-Making very good compost.
