MESCALINE By Jordin Hartley

History of Mescaline Mescaline has been used by people for thousands of years This Drug was used primarily by Toltec and the Chichimeca The earliest European records concerning this sacred cactus are those of Sahagún, who lived from 1499 to 1590 and who dedicated most of his adult life to the Indians of Mexico.

What is Mescaline? Mescaline is a hallucinogenic chemical found in the pulp of the peyote cactus or Lophophora williamsii People chew the buttons in order to encounter an intense hallucinogenic experience, usually during religious ceremonies The experience of taking mescaline is said to be similar to LSD or Psilocybin

Mescaline in Powder Form

Effects of Mescaline Extremely intense hallucinations Out of body experiences

Side Effects Vomiting Insomnia Dehydration Dilated pupils

Why people use mescaline Recreation Religion Potential healing properties (phobias, depression, addiction)

How is mescaline administered? Orally (most common way) is usually made into tea or mixed with juice due to bitter taste of eating raw peyote buttons Injection

DOSAGE The usual human dosage is 200–400 milligrams of mescaline sulfate (178–356 milligrams of mescaline hydrochloride) The average 3-inch (76 mm) button contains about 25 mg mescaline. (Meaning the usual human dose is 8-16 buttons)

Scientific Facts 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine is scientific name It is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid of the phenethylamine family Mescaline was first isolated and identified in 1897 by the German Arthur Heffter and first synthesized in 1919 by Ernst Späth

(Mescaline Molecule)

NO! Is mescaline found only in the Peyote Cactus? Mescaline can be found in the following plants: Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) Peruvian Torch cactus (Echinopsis peruviana) Cactaceae plant family Fabaceae (bean) family, including Acacia berlandieri San Pedro

Cactus plant, in the family of Cactaceae Peruvian Torch Cactus

Who Used Mescaline? Peyote was used by the Native Americans, especially the Huichol Indians from Mexico, for religious practices and rituals San Pedro and the Peruvian Torch were used in other Latin American regions including Peru and Ecuador Aldous Huxley, Havelock Ellis and Alesiter Crowley were among the first westerners to experiment with mescaline

Interesting facts People have associated Mescaline with the Cubist movement begun by Pablo Picasso and George Braque. The geometrical forms and flattening of three dimensional objects in Cubist art are similar to the visual experiences of Mescaline users Mescaline is extracted by preparing the cactus beginning with cutting the cactus from the very bottom, just above the ground. The top of the cactus that is left, or the crown, has disc-shaped forms that have been cut from the roots. Mescaline is not addictive

“Girl with Dark Hair” – Pablo Picasso  Is this what your mom would look like if you were on Mescaline?

More Facts The vomiting induced by eating peyote buttons was considered to be a form of cleansing by the Native Americans Mescaline is illegal in the United States and prohibited in other regions across the world. Certain Native American groups, however, have legal access to this substance for ritualistic ceremonies but their use is also regulated by the states in which they live
