Schematic drawing of how echocardiographic images are obtained Schematic drawing of how echocardiographic images are obtained. A transducer emits sound signals in a pie-slice–shaped pattern. Different types of tissues reflect the signal with varying intensities (eg, blood allows complete transmission of the signal, calcified tissues reflect almost all of the signal, and myocardium has an intermediate value), and the return signal is processed and then displayed on a monitor.
