Initial damage assessments: Airports – All airports closed due to ash in the atmosphere and ash accumulation on the ground Branti airport located 23 km NNW of Anak Karkatau closed due to heavy ash cloud in the area.

Bakauheni Ferry Terminus destroyed.

12 June 2007 Situation Update Roadways: Jakarta: Heavy damage to low-lying and coastal roadways; most impassable. Banten Province: Heavy damage to low-lying and coastal roadways; most impassable. Banderlampung: Heavy damage to low-lying and coastal roadways; most impassable. Lampung Province: Heavy damage to low-lying and coastal roadways; most impassable. Roadways – Heavy damage to all roadways in low-lying and coastal areas. Roadways generally impassable. All roadways being covered with ash, final accumulation expected to reach at least 1 foot in depth in metro Jakarta area.

Bridges presently considered unsafe until inspection / repair.

12 June 2007 Situation Update Industrial Complexes: Jakarta: Heavy damage / destruction in western Jakarta; toxic chemical spill Banten Province: Heavy damage / destruction along the coast; heavy damage / destruction to western Java oil rigs Banderlampung: Heavy damage in low-lying / coastal area Lampung Province: Heavy damage in low-lying / coastal areas Industrial complexes: Jakarta – Heavy damage / destruction to complexes in western Jakarta. Tsunami caused toxic chemical spill in western Jakarta releasing methyl isocyanate [MIC]. Audible early warning sirens failed to work ~ 500,000 persons believed to have been exposed. ~ 5,000 believed to have died from explosion and toxic chemical Banten Province – Heavy damage / destruction along the coast. Heavy damage / destruction to oil rigs along western Java coast. Banderlampung and Lampung Province – Heavy damage / destruction to complexes in low lying / coastal areas.

Residents in multi-storied structures fearful of returning to homes due to aftershocks Banderlampung – Heavy damage / destruction in low-lying and coastal areas. Damage to inland multi-storied structures due to earlier earthquake

All numbers are estimates, believed to be conservative. Sunda Straits Islands: Sebsei, Sebuki, Legundi & Singiang islands: Islands struck by pyroclastic flows 9 June and 30+ meter tsunamis 10 June. No information on number of possible pre-eruption evacuees. No reports of survivors. All 10,550 pre-eruption residents presumed dead until further information. Metro Jakarta area: Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang, Depok Deaths 131,000 Missing Unk. Injured / sick 42,000 Displaced 193,000 Total 366,000 Banten Province: Merak to Tamanjaya Deaths 85,000 Missing 160,200 Injured / sick 10,400 Displaced Unk. Total 255,600 Lampung Province Deaths 166,000 Missing 240,000 Injured / sick 9,000 Displaced 30,000 Total 445,000 Total, all casualties in affected area: 1,066,750.

International Humanitarian Community Response: 12 June 2007 Situation Update International Humanitarian Community Response: Limited to resources available in the affected areas; Delivery of personnel and resources hampered by ash and debris International humanitarian community response To date, limited to personnel and resources available in the immediate area. Delivery of personnel / resources from outside the immediate area expected to be hampered by ash cloud. Special concern over closure of regional airports due to ash cloud and closure of ports due to damage and debris in the water

UNCT assisting GOI in response 12 June 2007 Situation Update UNITED NATIONS: UNCT assisting GOI in response UNDAC Team in Singapore en route to Jakarta Virtual OSOCC established by OCHA Humanitarian Information Center to be established by OCHA UNHCR released US$25,000 to BAKORNAS United Nations working in conjunction with GOI United Nations and United Nations Country Team [UNCT] offered assistance to the Government of Indonesia [GOI] for disaster response Office of UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Jakarta offers support to BAKORNAS PB and SATKORLAK. Office of UN HC / UN OCHA seeks to establish coordination with SATKORLAK for Jakarta response & set up Jakarta HOC. Need SATKORLAK to identify point of contact to establish liaison. UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs [OCHA] established a Virtual On-Site Operations Coordination Center for coordination of response through electronic media OCHA to establish a Humanitarian Information Center – HIC – for collection and dissemination of information regarding humanitarian responses

United Nations [cont.]: 12 June 2007 Situation Update United Nations [cont.]: UNICEF, WHO, Min. of Health working on disease mitigation. WHO assisting Min. of Health in establishing 15 mobile health units WFP to provide 3.42 metric tons of food aid OCHA CERF released US$2 million. UN Children’s Fund [UNICEF], World Health Organization [WHO] and GOI Ministry of Health working with other partner organizations for disease mitigation WHO is assisting GOI Min. of Health in establishing 15 mobile health units. World Food Program [WFP] will provide an initial 3.42 metric tons of noodles and biscuits. UN OCHA’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) contributing initial US$2 million for relief.

Full listing of their activities found in 11 June 2007 PDMIN Report. Concern raised by Jakarta-based NGOs over uncoordinated response leading to competition for scarce resources and inconsistent response. Request by NGOs to SATKOLAK for identification of point of contact to establish liaison and HOC for Jakarta response.
