Cold Store & Ripening Chamber Climate Monitoring & Automation System E: Mobile: (India) 1 EK Engineering (India) Climate Control and automation system

Topics covered:  Why gas monitoring is needed  Importance of proper ventilation for long-lasting, fresh & safe products  Monitoring parameters  Horticulture cold stores monitoring  Ripening chamber monitoring  Meat etc processing and cold stores  Topology of the system and component integration E: Mobile: (India) 2

Need of Gas Monitoring: E: Mobile: (India) 3 CO 2 Monitoring : Agriculture and horticulture products produce CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas during breathing. High CO2 concentration reduce breathing, thereby form dull & wrinkle skin, low skin shine, high sweetness (specially in case of potatoes etc). Reduce product weight, market price. High CO2 also reduce O2 concentration resulting in anaerobic decomposition. Low O2 also cause darkening of potato chip colour, ultimately result in decay of interior cell with black heart.

Need of Gas Monitoring: E: Mobile: (India) 4 O 2 Monitoring : Agriculture and horticulture products get reverse photosynthesis recycle after harvesting and storage. Low O2 cause anaerobic fermentation, skin wrinkle, black skin spots, reduced shining of peel skin Reduce moisture contents Reduce weight Reduce quality

Need of Gas Monitoring: E: Mobile: (India) 5 NH 3 Monitoring : Ammonia is used as refrigerant in chillers and refrigeration plants. Ammonia is very toxic gas for biological life and human and life threatening with TWA = 25 ppm Ammonia leakage can percolate to stored items and thereby enter food chain. Ammonia can damage with corrosive effect on stored items

Need of Gas Monitoring: E: Mobile: (India) 6 Freon (R134, R22, R410 etc) Monitoring : Though normally Freon gases are non-toxic directly, their leakage cause oxygen depletion in the ambient air, thereby suffocation, death etc. Freon are either CFC or HCFC, and cause considerable damage to ozone layer. Freon leakage can sometime lead to fire, causing considerable damage to assets.

Need of Gas Monitoring: E: Mobile: (India) 7 Ethylene Monitoring : Ethylene is natural ripening agent and produced & emitted by ripening, sugary fruits / items Ethylene cause sweetening of fruits and products Over ripening cause fermentation and damage to products, thereby ethylene concentration need to be control and keep under required limits. Low ethylene concentration cause under-ripening, hence low market price of the products, while high ethylene concentration can damage products, increasing spoilage.

Need of Gas Monitoring: E: Mobile: (India) 8 Temperature & humidity Monitoring : High temperature will increased metabolic activities in the stored product, thereby increase damage. Low temperature will freeze up the inside content and reduce natural sweetness and taste, sometime forming carbohydrate, sucrose crystals High humidity will increase moisture content in the stored items, leading to bacterial and worm formation. Sometimes, dew formation also lead to considerable spoilage. Low humidity will reduce weight, sweetness, natural flavour and increase in rejection
