What will the framework do for you? CPD Framework What will the framework do for you? It will help you plan your development It will help you identify the right courses for yourself It will help you identify relevant resources It will help you engage with other teachers of similar levels and interests It will help you assess yourself It will help you gain certification for your personal professional development Three courses are planned, beginning with teachers at A2 competency level and going up to C1, possibly C2 level Similarly to ESP language courses such as English for Business, or EAP – English for Academic Purposes, EFT is a language course with a focus on pedagogy Having greater linguistic knowledge will help teachers to feel more confident in responding to learners’ needs, whilst the methodological input will help them to provide more motivating and effective lessons. Courses are aimed at in-service teachers with different degrees of teaching experience. Some teachers may have substantial experience of teaching other subjects, but have had to switch to teaching English because of local or national Ministry of Education requirements.  Others may be qualified English language teachers, who nonetheless have had scant opportunities to practice and develop ELT expertise The course content will include a range of materials for teachers of different age groups and levels We see a potential for accrediting the courses in some way and this is something we will be looking into The different stages of the course will be mapped onto the CPD framework The foundation stage has already started and I will give you an overview of this in the next slide

CPD framework What are the benefits of the framework? For teachers It provides a single starting place for CPD and pathways for development For ministries of education & other institutions It sets standards and facilitates benchmarking of teaching standards It is a tool for raising standards of English teaching It can be used to accredit local training

I was very nervous about teaching – but a teacher in the practice school really inspired me. Publishers’ workshops on the course book we used Really helped me understand how to use all the materials. Made some good friends – heard about my next job from a contact here Three courses are planned, beginning with teachers at A2 competency level and going up to C1, possibly C2 level Similarly to ESP language courses such as English for Business, or EAP – English for Academic Purposes, EFT is a language course with a focus on pedagogy Having greater linguistic knowledge will help teachers to feel more confident in responding to learners’ needs, whilst the methodological input will help them to provide more motivating and effective lessons. Engaging Teachers

CPD Framework – Teacher’s pathway RESOURCES NETWORKING PLANNING Join an association? Network online? TRAINING What’s my stage? What do I want to achieve? How can I achieve it? What course will meet my needs? This indicates how a teacher might use the framework for planning CPD: Self-assessment of his/her level Identification of goals for planning Identification of training, networking opportunities and resources that will achieve these goals We will be producing a a CPD guide for teachers which will detail CPD opportunities at different levels Pathways on www.teachingenglish.org.uk

A final thought A woman dreamed she walked into a brand-new shop in the marketplace. “What do you sell here?” she asked. “Everything your heart desires”, was the reply. Hardly daring to believe what she was hearing the woman decided to ask for the best things a human being could wish for. “I want peace of mind and love and happiness and wisdom and freedom from fear,” she said. Then as an afterthought, she added, “Not just for me. For everyone on earth.” The salesperson smiled, “I think you’ve got me wrong, my dear,” “We don’t sell fruits here. Only seeds.”
