IBM Green Energy Survey Executive Research Summary September 2007

Key research findings Green Energy Survey 61% of the 104 organisations participating in the survey stated that their organisation has an environmental strategy and/or policy that covers IT infrastructure in place. The most common methods by which organisations covered IT infrastructure in environmental strategies and/or policies were by “mandating overall reduction in environmental impact from IT infrastructure” (51%), “mandating methods for the disposal of old IT equipment” (40%), and “mandating reduction in energy consumption” (32%). Of the 39% of organisations that stated that they did not possess an environmental strategy and/or policy covering IT infrastructure, 71% stated that it was likely that their organisation would adopt such a strategy or policy in the future. Only 46% of the 104 organisations participating in the survey monitored their energy efficiency, utilising a wide variety of measures and methods to accomplish this goal. The three primary drivers for organisations to tackle emissions from IT infrastructure were “concern for the environment” (62%), ”corporate reputation” (50%), and “demand from the CEO/Senior Management/Board of Directors” (35%). 65% of all respondents participating agreed that redesigning IT infrastructure could help organisations to save money.

Key research findings…continued Green Energy Survey Key research findings…continued In regard to energy consumption, 43% of all respondents did not agree that their organisation’s IT department was aware of its energy usage. 46% of respondents agreed that their organisation’s IT department could reduce emissions from IT infrastructure in a few simple steps without compromising IT performance levels. 36% of respondents agreed while 38% of respondents disagreed that the reduction of emissions from IT infrastructure is a high priority for their IT department and their organisation. Of measures in place to reduce emissions from IT infrastructure, consolidation (76%), virtualisation (73%), power management hardware (56%), and cooling hardware/thermal management systems (56%) were the most often reported. The most popular method reported for organisations to dispose of old IT equipment while complying with environmental guidelines was to sell old IT equipment to a technology recycling firm for payment and/or credit toward future purchases (36%).
